A friend has had the front differential fail again after only 200 hours. It appears to be receiving no lubrication. The oil is very dirty. The differntial is full of dirty stuff. Is it possible the oil hole in the differential carrier is down instead of up? Which is the correct orientation? For some reason , these are not pressure lubricated and are above the oil level.

the diff carriers only go on one way. i think that the return lube oil from the tranmission comes back to the front diff, also it might be the steering return or oil cooler return that lubes the diff and ring and pinion. there should be hoses that connect top of front cover.

where is it failing? Pinion bearings? spider gears? Is dirt getting in through the breather or fill hole somehow? Differentials don't need pressurized lube big trucks even run just in an oil bath.
