Hyd oil getting very hot - why?

I have an IH364 diesel and after running it 45min-1hour the hyd. oil gets VERY hot. Also, once this happens, the lift still works and is smooth but it seems like you have to rev the tractor more for the lift to come up as fast as it did when the fluid was cold. What could cause this hot hydraulic fluid so quick?

are you running real hytran? Some of the fake stuff is good. Wolf's head hyrdaulic trans fluid works for us but it has to be the HT stuff. We ran some real cheap stuff in our ford backhoe one time and it got so hot that you could pop a hydraulic line with a ball-point pen.

Check the draft control lever and see if it is too far forward past the stop, do it with the engine running and see if it unloads.

The engine is not loaded as you say. It only loads for a split second when the 3pt. arms come all the way up or if I hit one of it's 2 remote hyd valves by accident or something with my arm while running the tractor. I know what you are talking about and that is not at all the problem. This tractor lifts and steers fine but is getting the hyd. oil hot for some reason pretty quick then it gets weak and slow.

As Nat said, maybe the hydraulic system is under load (pressure) all the time for some reason. This could be a defective control valve or some other restriction, causing the system to pressure all the time. Does the tractor engine sound like it is under load all the time which would happen if the hydraulics are pressurized. The pump working under pressure will quickly heat the hydraulic fluid.

The motor doesn't seem loaded at all like the hyd system is under load while not using it. I now own this tractor but used to run it with a 9' sickle mower for my best friend I bought it from for 5-6 years before I bought it from him. Back then (about 8 years ago), we put a brand new hyd pump on it as it got to where it wouldn't lift the sickle mower even when cold. I suspect this "new" hyd pump is now getting weak but why? I suspect there is some problem in the system causing the fluid to get so hot it's ruining the pumps. I say this because this "new" hyd pump we installed 7-8 years ago probably doesn't have 600-700 hours on it and it was out of the box new, not rebuilt. Why would it wear out so quickly? Keep in mind, now the hyd. system seems to work perfect before the fluid gets real hot. No noise, pwr strg is fine, lift is very smooth. After it gets hot it's fine, just doesn't seem as strong and needs the motor revved to do the same work as it would have done at idle when cold. Could there be bad o-rings, sticking valves in the "control" mechanism under the seat causing the hot fluid which could be causing premature pump failure and, thus, my entire problem?

Pumping the oil under high pressure causes it to heat up. As it heats up, it gets thinner.

I would expect that your hydraulic pump is somewhat worn. The thicker oil "seals" the worn areas of the pump and allows it to produce more pressure at lower RPMs. Once the oil thins out, this seal is lost, so you need to run the tractor at a higher RPM to develop the pressure.

Hydraulic oil will ALWAYS heat up when the tractor is running. After all, it's being used to run the power steering and other systems besides the 3PT lift and remotes. What you need to determine is if the oil is getting excessively hot, or if what you're seeing is normal.

If the oil is getting excessively hot, and you're not using the hydraulics heavily, then there might be a restriction in the system somewhere. Could be a valve that's not centering properly to let the oil flow through freely.

Also, keep in mind, my 364 diesel has pwr strg so it has the "dual pump" setup which is essentially 2 identical hyd pumps back-to-back. One for pwr. strg, the other for the lift. My pwr. strg works fine but leaks fluid out a "weep" hole on the cylinder real bad. Could bad o-rings and packing in this pwr. strg. cyl cause heating of the hyd oil?

I had a 733 with a D206 engine with that same style tandem pump. I just got a new one from Case IH for $450. It was doing about what you said yours is, oil getting hot and getting week. It got to where it would'nt work at all after it had run for a while sometimes. Mine was also foaming. After I replaced the pump it doesn't seem to do that anymore but have haven't run it for along time yet.

I may end up having to buy a new one but I'm real interested in fixing the problem. As I said, this tractor had a brand new pump put on itby me for the previous owner about 8 years ago and less than 1000 hours on the tractor since then. I don't believe for a second that these pumps just wear out that quick. I think there is something causing the fluid to get hot which is resulting in the premature hyd pump failure. Are you saying you recently bought a new dual pump setup from CaseIH for only $450? Heck the cheapest place I've found for a new one was $500 and it wasn't a CaseIH dealer. I just assumed the dealer would be higher but I guess I'm wrong if you bought this recently.

Yes about a month ago I got it, part number 1986964c1. I checked three dealers and got three different prices ranging from 450 to 760. Don't know why the difference. My pump mounts on the engine and runs off the timing gears on the right hand side. Has your oil been getting hot ever since the new pump or did it just start?
