Mornin' I have a 4b mag that used to be a great two turns on the crank and shes a runnin' mag.
But since I worked on it I have to get the wife to give me a pull. Two feet and she pops right off. Little history. The mag in question had a broken lower mount. worked fine just a nasty looking weld holding it together. Well the other day I was at the machine shop in Stevenville and the ole boy had a rusted up old core laying under the bench. Fairly nasty but a good case. Well I ofered him 20 for it and he bit. So yesterday I took two and made one. Good clean up job aon the new case. Best I can tell it is all timed right.
All I used from the core was the case. Everything else from the old Hot mag. I still have good hot fire at the plugs. But turn and turn no start on the hand crank. Keep in mind it was all good before i FIXED it. Only thing I can figure is when I put the impulse coupling back together I did an improper preload on the spring. I alignened the spring in the slot and tensioned it untill the ears would engage. put on the lock nut and thats it. the springs on the dogs are there. and working. any tips. Oh and I timed the cam and rotor with the cam at nintey degres then the mark on the rotor pointing at the cam. tractor runs fine just got to pull it to start Please Help.
Herb

Just an option here...When I have had that problem in the past, it has usually been point gap. Might want to check that...Had an F-12 with an F-4 mag that would only start by pulling...until I checked the gap and put it from about 22 back to 13 thousandths.

The only thing I could think of would be the rotor timing . I am not completly fimelar with a 4 B but on an IH mag on the leter series and cub that can do it. I guess if there is no difference In the two then listen for the trip every revoulution, Are you getting a good snap? If alls well I guess play with the timing a little . Sorry I could not be more Help JON

Thanks Magman. I do have good snap. I tried Kevins suggestion yesterday. I went from 20 to 15. did no good. I guess I will move the rotor a tooth at a time not sure if to advance or retard though. seems that retard may be the way to go. although I am not getting any kick back on the crank. I spose I can flip a coin.
Thanks again ya'll
Herb

I have a super hot mag for a continental engine I will never need. Can you use it? I would trade you even up for a mag that would fit a Farmall H.

It has the bluist spark I have ever seen on a mag.

I think so. It is the exact same as a Farmall H Mag but the mounting plate is angled. I can check this weekend for you if you are interested in it. I also have three other mags for farmall h is various states of disrepair. I have, I think 9 mags in total and 8 distributors for farmall H.

Want to sell them eventually. The dealers around here are licking their lips to get them from me for a few pennies.

I have so many H parts I do not know where to start in selling them. I overextended my quest for Farmall H parts and now I am out of room.

Well Scott it goes like this. I have three of them darn Y mount mags sitting here right now I bought them on ebay cheap to use for parts for my other H4 Mags I can however make an H4 By changing the mounting plate and the cam on the enternal Rotor For you if you want. If you have the parts that I would need I would only charge you a few bucks to do it. I am however interested in any Dist, Mag , for the IH letter series Tractors and the cub. Like I told a nother Gent today I have to make money TOO. So I can only give what I can for these parts . By the time I buy parts and labor to fix I dont get that much out of them. I like to make $50.00 on a mag for going all the way through it and blast clean polish and reasemble with new parts and Grease and Oil The right places. LOL and I even use Dialetric grease in the caps and such for good continuity and longer lasting. That stuff is not cheap by any means. But Hey let me know I not trying to steel any thing just make it worth both our whuiles. JON
