460 Diesel Won't Start: Busted Injector Pump Shaft

Worked on the 460 tonight. The return line to the tank is clear. There is a screen where the fuel line reaches the injector pump and it was clean. Turned out the pump shaft is twisted off, so the diesel fuel was going no where. Looked through the timing plate hole (took two screws out); when turning the engine over, the pump did not spin. I removed the pump. I wonder if I can buy a replacement shaft for it, or if I can find a reubuilt one somewhere. I guess there may be one at a salvage yard. I wonder if it can possibly be welded and put back in? It looks like the shaft will slide out one end.

Guys you are right by having him take the pump to a shop. Whenever a driveshaft in a Roosa/Stanadyne pump breaks 99% of the time it's seized. Your shop should be able to tell you what caused the seizure by the marks on the rotor. Make sure they have pressed it apart to show you. Stanadyne had a bulletin on pump seizure patterns and it helps to diagnose the root cause of the seizure.

Send an email to RoosaMaster@belangerdiesel.com
to see what they would charge to rebuild your pump.
I wouldn't buy a used pump, you may end up with the same problem. Hal

Took it to a shop and the estimate is $562 to rebuild it. Seems high, but maybe that is normal. Can"t get an exchange on it, so the only thing they can do is rebuild it they said. So, I am looking for more reasonable options. Called a salvage yard in Missouri and they don"t have one. Guess I"ll keep looking.

If that includes a new head that is a very good price, I had mine done about 8 years ago with a new head over $600.

Ron,

I'd go back and have it rebuilt; that just isn't a bad price at all; I would have expected around $700.

As for the salvage yards route, you already have a used one.

Yep, when you're diagnosing these things, or anything for that matter, you've got to get to the root cause. Sometimes the obvious problem is the result of a not-so-obvious problem.

You replace or repair that shaft and put the pump back on the tractor without finding out what was REALLY wrong, and you're just going to break it again, or worse, break something else.

There's a 99% chance that the shaft broke because the pump couldn't turn.

Ron you will have to have the pump rebuilt, I never saw a broken shaft that the head of the pump was not bad. When you put the pump back on don't try and start the engine untill you have good fuel at the injectors with the lines loose, then put the lines on with a good half throttle crank untill you get white smoke then us the glow plugs. Remember this engine should not start without the glow plugs. good lock By the way the shaft is ment to brake to protect the pump when things go wrong.

If it twisted the shaft either it got water in the pump or the head seized either way it needs to got to a pump shop and be rebuilt.

I don' tknow much about diesels. Do you mean that the head in the engine possibly siezed, causing the shaft to twist off, or do you mean there is a head (piece in the pump called the head)in the pump that maybe siezed resulting in a busted shaft? I think you mean that it is a pump problem either way, so it needs to be rebuilt by a shop. Thanks.

The injector pump is like an engine, pistons move up and down, and the head is where the diesel gets pressurized to be injected.

Take the pump to a shop.

Thank you to everyone for the great and much needed advice. I talked to my neighbor this morning about the pump rebuild and the price. We went over the various options and he is wanting to go ahead with the rebuild. Just taking awhile to confirm for sure as it is quite a bit of money, but there aren"t too many other options. I am checking with Roosa on their price. Pretty sure the head in the pump siezed up from sitting for so long. Thanks again.
