140 Lift

Other day had bush hog weight 275-300 pounds on back of tractor. Had to go about 3 miles down road to where I was going to mow. Had lift all way up on back. About 3 times before I got there lift started to go down right by itself. Each time it did once I raised lift control back to forward position it would come right back up and stay for awhile. I checked fluid and it was ok in reservoir. What else might be problem. Lift pump etc? Only did it intermittently. Thanks

Avery: Upon reading Jim Becker's post, I reread yours again. I think Jim may have nailed the real problem, that is if lever is following the hitch to downward position. I replaced those friction pads in my tractors some years ago.

What in fact my 130 does, is implement will settle couple of inches then system will fetch it back up to the preset lever position, without touching lever. Sorry if I may have mis led you. Two separate problems, two separate solutions.

Another problem I had when friction pads were in poor condition, I would lower an implement to say for example 1/2 way on lever. When hydraulics completed that pre selected stroke, lever would continue to move on it's own all the way to bottom, thus hydraulic function would do the same.

Also those friction pads are spring loaded, and with rust built up the sleeve around lever shaft can pivot with lever rather than lever shaft pivoting within the sleeve. I remember when I fixed my tractors I bought enough springs and friction pads for both tractors. I still have two friction pads on hand. Cleaning and lubrication cured those two.

All the other posts suggest real possibilities for the problem. A really simple and low cost thing to try first is to adjust the hydraulic control linkage exactly to specifications. My books are not near, but I have both the owner's manual and the 140 service manual. The adjustment procedure is in at least one of them.

If the control lever is moving by itself, you may only need a new friction disk for the lever.

Avery: Scotty is quite correct, worst case is that $100. rebuild. If you don't have any external leaks, I wouldn't get awfully excited though. These systems are actually quite light weight when it comes to hydraulics. I have check chains made up for my tractors, about 2' of 5/16 chain with slip link hook. When I'm moving some distance with a mounted implement, I put the chains around rear rockshaft and to and around hitch cross bar. Takes the weight off hydraulic systen while travelling.

My Farmall 130 has actually been doing as your tractor is for the past 5 years. I have no external leaks. You hardly notice it when in field working, and on route I use the check chains. I also use those chains on 140 with system working perfect.

I started doing this when I built a 60 gallon boom sprayer. I had some concerns that hitch might not take the stress of 750 lbs of sprayer and liquid. I was using restricted chemicals at time and could not chance a spill. The chains worked so well I use them always now.

Avery, Sounds to me like your touch control may need a rebuild. You might start by buying the Touch Control manual from Binder Books for $7.95. It will take you through a series of tests to establish if your unit indeed needs to be rebuilt. Worst cas senario would be a rebuild kit from your Case IH dealer to the tune of about $100. It sounds to be like your hydraulic fluid is leaking by your main cylinder o-rings.
