How do I clean my oil air intake

I took off my oil bowl air cleaner system on my tractor and it was absolutely dirty! Is there a way to clean this? It is a wire mesh type of filter. Can I soak this in gas to break up the sludge in it?

Thanks

Rustyfarmall's got it. I had the same question a couple of years ago. Some folks go so far as to drill out the spot welds so as to remove the keeper frames to the mesh, then bolt the frames back in when clean. Way too much trouble and is invasive to the original design, IMHO. Do the sloshing thing and it'll come out fine.

Remove the entire assembly from the tractor. Take the bowl off, and immerse the rest of it in a 5 gallon bucket filled with diesel fuel or solvent if you have it. Let it soak overnight, then agitate the assembly and let it soak some more. When you think it is clean remove it from the bucket and set it somewhere to drain. You can finish up by blowing compressed air through it to dry.
