I saw an ad for a super a with a mid mount sickle mower. Can any one tell me what to look for when I go to check it out. I have a hobby farm with horses and want to use the mower to cut hay and spread manure. I have a JD3020 with a loader and an 8n with a bush mower for other projects. You can never have to many spare tractors. The asking price is $2,500. Any and all advice would be appreciated.
Thanks! John

I recently picked up a Super A with a mid mounted sickle mower. This mower is only 5 feet and I would like a larger one. However the mid mounted arrangement is great, particularly as you are not having to look behind all the time. I got the tractor and mower in trade for some welding. It had been sitting outside for about 25 years but an hour checking fluids, cleaning the points, new battery etc and I drove it home. I think you will like this tractor.

Check to see if the top of the rear axle housing has a crack in it. Just below where the fender rest. That might be some reason to talk him down some and check for slack in the steering. There is a Farmall 100 with some implements with it for $1250 north of Houston.

Not a bad price if it runs decent, has good tires and the sickle is in good shape. We had to pay more for our A's than we did for our h's or m. 2500 and 2650. One had a homemade loader and mower the other has full cultivators and planters.

$2500 is no steal, but in good shape it is worth it.

The mid mount mower is great, assuming it's a wobble head, it will mow even straight up. I got used to mowing brush into and out of fields with mine. You can also trim hedges.

The Super A will handle a 9 ft sickle.

The Super A is a great little tractor and will make a nice mowing machine with the mid mount mower. About a 6ft bar as is big as I would want on that machine. As far as pulling a spreader, it would have to be a smaller unit, since the tractor only weighs about 2300 lbs, and you only have about 18hp. You will want to check the side of the block behind the carb for any patches, the block often cracked there without antifreeze. How does it run, any unusual noise from the transmission, if you can get someone to do a compression test on all cylinders. How does the tractor look, was it abused? etc. Others may be able to offer more help!

What do you think about the price?

I think the price is a little high, but if everything is in good shape and the mower doesnt need any work, like new cutterbar or rockguards, probablly not too bad. You would want the tractor to have good paint and everything working correctly. I bought my Super A for $700 but have put a few bucks into it allready and not done yet. If your not sure, get someone else to go look at it with you!
