My brother and I are working on our 1948 McCormick W6 with 6 volt system. The original starter has 3 mounting bolts and we're not having much luck finding a used 3 bolt type. We may have ours rebuilt if we can't locate a good used one. Do any of you guys happen to know if a starter from the 300 or 450 or some other Farmall will work on the W6? The W6 has the same engine as the Farmall M but all the M starters seem to be 2 bolt style. Also any opinions pro or con about using the 8 volt battery on this tractor instead of the standard 6 volt. Thanks in advance for your help and opinions.

IF it were me,Id rebuild the starter and change it to 12 volt using the existing generator and have it rewound for 12 volt, you get the benfit from 12 volt starting, plus keep that original look.

Ron - My advice is to get your existing starter rebuilt rather than trying to find a used one. This way you KNOW you have a good starter and that it fits!

I regard 8 volt batteries as a "band aid" fix for hard starting problems. They are more expensive - when you can find them at all. And they are tough to keep properly charged, especially if you don't use the tractor much or run it at low speeds.

Better approach is to spend the $$ getting the starter in good working order. Also make sure you have properly sized battery cables with GOOD (soldered) terminals, and a good 6 volt battery. You'll then have no need for an 8 volt battery!
