We use 15w40 i ours, i found out that the low ash was expensive too, We crossed the #'s of the low ash and tried to find if any other company made it, for a lower price, but case has a patent on it. We get it from napa, if the jug says napa on it, then it's valvoleen oil inside.

Low-Ash is absolutly nessacary in the IH six-cylinder gassers and a couple newer four cylinders based on that design. For an older H/M style engine, especially a show tractor, any quality engine oil will be fine. For a working tractor, anything the guys listed below if fine, I like the 15w40 idea.

Since I have a 460 (currently disassembled), what is special about the 6's, they were orginally truck engines built before low ash oil, in fact before detergent oil -- wonder what IH changed in the tractor version to require low ash oil?

My CIH mechanic just gave my brother a lesson on why he should be using a Low Ash oil in his 606. He doesn't get many hours (2,000- 2,500) between overhauls and the mechanic is certain the wrong oil is a contributing factor. My brother uses the cheapest of everything.

David: 35 years ago I was running 3 kinds of oil in tractors, trucks, car, etc. I had several employees and they kept getting oils mixed up. Since diesel tractors were the main concern on my farm I switched everything to a diesel motor oil. I went with Esso XD3, 30 in summer and 20 in winter. Best move I ever made. Later I switched to still XD3 but changed to 15W-40. Since that time I've always got 300,000 miles out GM V8 gas engines. 10,000 to 13,000 hours on tractor diesels. I don't have exact figures for Farmall gas tractors, really haven't rebuilt one since, but then those old gassers didn't see a lot of hours either. I have a 4 cycle lawn mower IH dealer gave me in 1975, after buying 1066. That mower had mowed close to 1/4 acre per year until last year. Not much original on it but the engine is. I also got 400,000 miles out of one of those mickey mouse 6.2 Chevy diesels.

I would stay with the top of line diesel motor oils. You just don't need to pay that much for it. I'm buying mine for about $2.50 CAD per litre, a shade more than your quart. Remember the $2.50 CAD will equal about $2.00 USD. Best maintainence I know of. Sure you can use cheaper oil, but what are the costs of engine rebuilds.

No sarcasm intended -- Just go to Walmart and buy some 15W40. There is simply no way that an H/M type gas engine needs high dollar oil. Diesels -- there is controversy about that.

My Gawd man! Anything you pull off the cut rate shelf is going to be better than those things had in them origionaly. Heck, I know several old timers took the used oil out of thier cars and put it in the tractor then through it out (actually burned it for heat)! I know the tractors too. They still run fine.

Are you plowing or pulling? There is going to be dissent among the ranks but those girls lasted 50+ years running on distilled lard. You can't go wrong unless you try. Buy the cheap multi visc stuff unless you are really using them. Your tractors will be just as happy
