Drove BN yesterday and it was OK. Today drove it for about 1/2 hr. at high throttle and overheated and started to smoke out the exhaust. Shut if off right away. Did a compression check and all cylinders 100-105 psi. Antifreeze in radiator full and clean. Top hose was HOT and bulging. Bottom hose felt cool. I put some STP carb cleaner for gas in tank before running it today. Would that have any effect on running hot? Carb is set 1 1/4 turn off seat on Zenith. Thank you.

First thing to do is flush the radiator and coolant passages. Flushing the radiator is pretty simple...just pull off the lower hose and flush it with a garden hose. I bet you find the lower outlet plugged with goop. Change the hoses while you are at it.

If that doesn't solve the problem, you will want to look at the head gasket. Radiator bubbling?
Water in the oil? Not a difficult thing to fix really...these Farmalls are made to be easy (kinda) to work on. The fuel treatment would have zero effect on the cooling system, don't worry about that.

Hold your hand against the radiator to see if it feels hot. If cool, the radiator cores may be plugged. Hal

My BN doesn't have a thermostat. Drove it yesterday and was OK. I noticed the idle surge now and then. I checked for a vacuum leak with propane around the manifold but didn't find anything. I noticed when I first started it a small spray of some fluid came out the exhaust stack then quit when it got warm. Any more ideas I would appreciate them. Thanks

BN won"t have a thermostat or a pressurized cooling system unless it was modified after the factory.
Sounds like you need to flush out the radiator and the block. Take the bottom water inlet off and flush up in that lower block passage as best you can. Then flush down through from the top.

If it still gets hot after that and the radiator is open, then you"ll probably need to go deeper into the block after sludge, rust and scale. Or maybe installing a water pump would help.

A point on that thermosyphon cooling system: make sure the coolant level is up to within an inch or so of the neck of the radiator. That type of system needs to be full to work.

Doesthe BN have a thermostat? I didn't think they had a waterpump, but had a thermosyphon cooling system, hence no thermostat. You didn't by chance put the antifreeze and water in separately, or adda bunch of antifreeze without premixing it? The thermosyphon system will not circulate if they are not mixed.

One more thing just came to me. If the thermostat was stuck, the top hose would not be hot.

Sounds like what Jay suggested, thermostat is stuck closed. The coolant can not circulate into the radiator. Good thing you shut it off. Hal

Sound like tstat stuck. If hot at top and cold at bottom no flow.
