'47 M water pump questions

I've read that water pumps rarely stop pumping totally, but that's what seems to have happened on my '47 M. It's been overheating and blowing hot fluid out the overflow tube, worse this year than last. I drained most of the radiator fluid and removed the thermostat housing and top radiator hose. (No thermostat, must have been removed by the previous owner.) If I refill the radiator enough so the water starts overflowing where the thermostat should be, then start the tractor for a few seconds, shouldn't the pump push water out the top of the thermostat hole? Mine doesn't. The driver and drive pin appear to be installed correctly. I put a new fan belt on last summer and it's adjusted to the correct tension. The fan is spinning good. Is my water pump bad, or am I missing something obvious, which is entirely possible... Thanks in advance. This is a great forum.

Other than the system being clogged up,the only thing I can think of is the set screw that holds the imppelor to the shaft has come loose or the impellor has broke or something.Hold on to your wallet, those aint cheap,in fact you can get a good used rebuildable pump way cheaper.(or at leats thats the way it worked out for me)

Boy, are you sure there isn't some blockage somewhere. I would remove the water pump and check the holes that are in the engine block behind the pump body just to have that eliminated. Also remove lower hose and run water from top to bottom of radiator just just for the heck of it. If your real brave remove that plate behind the carb and wash that all out good. I've seen those all plugged up. good luck. Tim K.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I pulled the fan shroud off and removed the radiator so I could get to the pump. Removed it, and it looks fine. The impeller spins with the fan and it looks good with no broken impeller blades. Ran water from a hose into the top hole in the block, water pours out the bottom hole. Water also pours out of the drain plug hole in the left side of the block, so I'm hoping those passages are OK. Ran water through the radiator, some water comes out the bottom, but not much, so it looks like it may be mostly plugged inside. I'll take it to a radiator shop and see if they can clean it out. Thanks again.

Our local radiator shop said if you have a overheating problem and the thermostat is ok you should hold your hand against the radiator to see if if feels hot. If it doesn't the radiator cores are probably plugged and needs to be rodded because the water isn't circulating through the radiator. Hal

I echo what Tim says. If you have done all of that and your know that your impeller is turning, I would remove your water jacket plate. A lot of times flake rust and build up in those inlets and cause your water to just about stop. HOWEVER, if you remove that plate, make sure that you buy a new gasket. Form-a-gasket will not cut it when it comes to keeping it from leaking.
A new water pump is 250-300 if you can find one.
I would go with a used one from a salvage tractor. M water pumps very rarly just go bad. They were made to last so I wouldn"t be worried about getting a used one. Hope you getter" fixd.
