Teen Killed in Tractor Accident
Last Update: 6/3/2005 3:38:56 PM

A 16-year-old LaFayette boy died Friday after his tractor crashed into a ditch on Dennison Road in Fabius.

State police say Michael Neugebauer was on his way to Fabius-Pompey high school for tractor day.

Police say Neugebauer was driving his tractor down a steep hill around 7:15am. He picked up speed, tried to pass an ATV, but clipped it instead.

The tractor spun out of control and crashed into the ditch.

16-year-old Kyle Sullivan was in a trailer pulled by the tractor. He has a broken leg.

The driver of the ATV, Kayla Carter, was not hurt.

I was unstoppable in my not-so-distant younger days. But I was more afraid of what would happen once my dad found out i busted up the equipment than i was of the equipment. I've been on and around tractors since I could keep up walking with my dad uncle and grandpa, so I did know a lot about how they are supposed to do things before i started driving at about 11. My big thing was getting stuck. I don't think there's a mud hole on the place I haven't had to be helped out of. Some things just come naturally to me.

In the late sixties it was a big thing to drive tractors to school for the homecoming parade, etc. One year, a friend of mine borrowed a neighbor's five bottom, sixteen inch steerable Deere plow to pull behind his dad's 3010 Diesel trycycle front end tractor with no front end weights. The friend got cocky, decided he was going to show off and pull a "wheelie". When he did, the light front on that 3010 went way in the air and dumped off a couple of kids riding on the fenders and luckily the tractor did not go all the way over and the two that fell off avoided the plow and were only slightly injured. That could have been a real bad one, too. My friend and I are both 51 years old today, and he still avoids talking about that incident when it is brought up. Shook him up pretty bad.

It's very unfortunate all the way around. Certainly too young to go so soon. I can't preach enough not to get too comfortable with any tractor, they can always surprise the best when least expecting it. Gotta be like a lizard with the eyes and senses going in all directions all the time. And I agree, probably last year for tractor day at that school. My condolences.

Mark

Very sad indeed. Respect is the key word. Tractors are machines designed for a purpose. When a person looses( or forgets) the limits of the machine, an accident is bound to happen. What was supposed to be a fun fill "Tractor Day" started off with a tragedy.

jon, that's a shame for several reasons. its a real tragedy to lose a life, plus it will give school officials a reason not to have tractor day next year. the circumstances sound like the boy didn't have much seat time on tractors.

I probably had as much time driving a tractor when I was young as any one. Unfortunately in similar circumstances at that age I might have done the same thing; ie, raced the ATV. No doubt the rider enticed him. However, I would hope with having had experience maneuvering in tight quarters, that I would not have clipped the ATV and would have avoided running off the road. Spatial awareness has to be learned. The root problem is that kids believe they are indestructible and nothing can go wrong, and since the tractor was outside it's normal operating environment, they may temporarily "forget" or abandon what they have learned. A few words or a reminder from my parents (not necessarily unkind) before departing with the tractor would have been beneficial.

Using a farm tractor to race an ATV? Thats about the only thing IH never promised of its tractors.....that they are speed demons.
To operate a tractor is to RESPECT what it can do,and what it can damage if used carelessly.I'm sure here, everyone respects their mounts...but not every 16 year old does...nor do they even realize what havoc thousands of pounds of cast iron can do to their well-being.
