2+2 tractor

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the 2plus2's that IH built? Would be interested in differences between the 3388/3588/3788s and the 63/65/6788's. What were the transmissions? I'm thinking the 6000 series were using the same transmission as the 5088/5288/and 5488's and the 3000 series used the same transmission as the 1466/1486's. Correct? Any trouble with these tractors or were they an "old reliable"? Thanks Sid

If you like having the cab opened up they are nice in the summer. The engine is way out front and I think the fan blows forward. They don't make a good big horse though, we blew the pressure plate apart chopping with our 37 (it's had the wrench put to the pump a couple times). the 33 uses the dt436 and the 35 and 37 uses dt466(derated some in 35's). the 33 and 35 use 4 speed like the 10's and 14's and the 37 uses the 3 speed like the 15's. all 3 run 3 1/4 inch axles but when you consider that you will never put all the power to less than 2 wheels they are sufficient. the 30's also shifted like the 86 series. I think 19 of the 7288s survived the buyout, I found one in sw ohio a few years back and they were asking $54,500. It had the same rearend castings and 3pt setup as the magnum series tractors.

My understanding is that they're a love/hate machine. Either you loved them or hated them. They take some getting used to for driving if you've never been in one before, they make for a good cheap front wheel assist tractor, and if treated right they will last a while. With the exception of the 7000 series the front axles weren't heavy enough to handle the load they had. One of the guys at work used to have one and he said to leave the duals off the front so it can slip some under heavy pull. The only other thing that seems to be common on these is the hoods all have their problems of falling off or can't get them open(slight exageration). Myself, I don't mind them but there are other tractors that I'd take before a 2+2.

We have a 3588 and like it, I wish the shift levers were out of the way, and I wish it had a better tranny brake. Both are suppose to be improved on a 6000 series. I lot of guys like them, a lot of guys don't. I like them because they are cheap power. The big don't is high horsepower and duals all the way around. There are guys that have done it and got away with it, but it could cause a lot of trouble. They weren't meant to be little Steigers. Our 3588 runs around 175, some run 200. Then there are guys that push them over that. All I can tell you is that I like ours.

You mentioned that the TA was shifted electronically, push button, or by itself on demand? Trouble? How reliable were these beasts!? Thanks again! Sid

I have not owned/driven one of these tractors, so I can't really comment on the reliability. If you don't get another response here, try to post this question at www.redpowermagazine.com I think some of the guys over there have experience with these tractors. Shifting the TA is done by moving the speed lever sideways. I scanned in a picture from a buyer's guide. It's a little hard to see but should give you an idea how it works. Let me know if you want to see any more pictures.

Unfortunately, the 6000 series did not use the transmission from the 5088/5288. They are the same tranmissions as the ones in the 3000 series with the exception that the TA is shifted electronically. The 5088/5288 tranmission was not used until the 7000 series (7288,7488) and not many of these were produced before the sale to Tenneco. The shifting levers were moved to the right side in the 6000 series, so they are more like the 3688 setup.
