Okay guys I need your help on getting through some trouble shooting issues with my new toy. Hydraulics for the fast hitch are not working. Checked and changed the filter. Not sure where to check the hydraulic fluid...just got the shop manual yesterday. The fast hitch was very slow and now has become unresponsive. Any leads as to where to start or is there a way to test the pump to see if it is working? thanks for any help ..this rookie appreciates it. Another question...is a hydraulic pump easy to rebuild yourself or is that a good one to send out to have done?

240 hydraulic reservoir is in the bell housing. Your new manual should give you the specifics. If you changed the filter without adding any fluid, it may now be too low to operate.

The pump is a simple gear pump. Hardly anything goes wrong other than the seal on the input shaft leaking. When this happens, it will dump the hydraulic oil into the engine. If your hydraulic oil statrs disappearing, check the crankcase for being overfull. If you have that problem, fixing is not a difficuly do-it-yourself job unless the shaft is worn too far for a new seal to hold.

Look on the left side of the tractor, back from the serial number plate. You should find a pipe plug screwed into the housing, just behind the area where the housing tapers in to the smaller diameter. That is the hydraulic filler/level plug. Oil should be within 1/2 inch of the bottom of the filler hole.

Silly question about the plug....How in the heck do you get a wrench on it? I tried the ole cresent wrench and there is no room to move or get a good bite on it. Its like a 1 inch socket or larger and to get a driver on it is impossible. Jim I really appreciate the info you have given me.

I recall it as a pipe plug with a square top. I think an open end of the right size will fit although you may have to keep turning it over because there isn't room for 1/4 turn at a time. Sometimes an over size 12 point box end will work on a square pipe plug too.

If it is one of the big hex plugs, it may be even more difficult. Even in that case, the right size open or box end is probably best because it will require less space than an adjustable or socket.

I had a 340 and, if the 240 is similar, the hydraulic oil is the same as the transmission oil. The pick up tube was on the right side of the transmission and if the tractor got somewhat unlevel the oil would flow away from the pick up, allowing the pump to suck air. I would have to get the tractor back reasonably level and crack a fitting (with the tractor running) on the pressure side so the pump could reprime itself. Your mileage may vary on a 240.

I'm glad the hydraulic reservoir on the original Utes (300/330/350)is under the seat(and the pump being under the distributor).Reading where the reservoir and pump is on other models is scary.....
