Bought a '61 460 gas, fast hitch, wide front with a 2000 loader on it last fall to do disking, plowing, cultivating, brush mowing, maybe some small sqare baling and snow/dirt moving. We've had a Ford 8N to do plowing, disking and snow pushing but needed something bigger. It's all hobby/weekend warrior use but still work about 40 acres. We have a lot of hills and that 460 just seems a bit nervous going up and down hills (maybe it's just me.) We never need to work sideways, just up and down. The question: It it safer to sell the 460 and look at a 460U, 606, 574 or something similar? All 3 of these tractors or either for sale or going up for auction in the next month or so. Also... what's the best/first utility type IH tractor that had a cab as an option? Ideas/comments would be appreciated. Thanks! -Mike

John A. has good advice--I would follow it.

Now for my 2 bits: I've got a fifteen acre, very hiily place, and for the last three years have had to deal with the aftermath of two logging operations, a wind storm and a very nasty ice storm. My little Kubota lacked terribly in the butt department when it came to skidding log, trees, limbs and brush. As Dad would say "it didn't have enough in its pants."

I brought the family's 460 narrow front over here for more muscle. To tell you the truth, I was quite surprised at how confidence-inspiring it was on the hill sides despite its tall stance. It is weighted fairly well, so combined with the bite and sure-footedness the 38" rear rubber gives you, it didn't slip and slide around like the little Kubota did (and does!)

You will be OK especially with the wide front set up. Just use common sense.

Thanks for the comments, we really do like the tractor. Is the free-wheeeling T/A a concern? I haven't been using it on the hills. Actually haven't used it much at all until we get some bigger machinery.

The design of the TA on the 460 is such that free-wheeling is normal, but very potentially harmful. The TA is designed to provide more drawbar pull (or a slower speed) under load, not to hold back when going down hill. Many a TA has been ruined by pulling the lever back to let it free wheel going down hill. The TA lever must be ahead when going down hill (unless you are plowing or pulling another similar load that will prevent the tractor from free wheeling) or damage will likely result to the TA and you possibly could loose control of the tractor. That said, don’t be afraid to use it when you need more pulling power, just yank it back and enjoy the extra pulling it will give you.

Mike, IMO...first set out the stance on you 460. Make sure the rears wheels are dished out not in! Widen out the tires spaceing to 40's or better. Load the rears with fluid for wt. Then hang at leadt 3sets of wt on each rear corner.
I prefer to be up and away from the dust and debree that a taller rowcrop tractor offer over the utility models. The suggestions above will cost you little in cash , some time too, but will help give you a clearer picture of you real needs.
To your ? about safety. It is all the operator. It is him or her that is ultimately going to make the decisions that will lead to a good days work or the one momentary laps in judgement that may cost ones life.
Perhaps your hill is not worth the risk, if you are not comfortable up there, fence it off and keep it grazed short. Just a thought.!
Later,
John A.
