I bought a 1940 "A". I know it runs because they started it (I wasn't there when they started it)I drove it , no smoke and great oil pressure. Crank start only...I can't even get it to fire. I manual set choke at full, turn it over a few times then set choke to half...nothing. Shoot's gas like crazy out of the carb. What am I doing wrong...HELP.

If all else fails, and another tractor is available, tow it. Takes two people, one on towing tractor and one on towed tractor. Ignition on, gas on, put in fourth gear clutch disengaged. Tow, then engage clutch to start.

Yep that is the way I used to start mine when it was being stubburn only difference I let wife pull me with pickup. Trouble was when I asked her to go slow I was thinking 5 to 10 MPH and she thought 25 to 30 was slow enough. After a couple of fun rides we got better at it.

the pull you described is a ground on the mag. you have to pull it out and hold it out to stop the motor, push it back in and she will fire..

Your post doesn't mention you turned the ignition switch on. There should be a push - pull switch accessible from the tractor seat. Pull it out when you are trying to start the tractor and push it in to stop the engine. Be careful crank starting a tractor. Make sure the transmission is in neutral, the brakes are locked and the crank must be gripped without the thumb around the crank handle. Place your thumb along the side of the grip and not over it and pull upward in short strokes. It has been 50+ years since I cranked started a tractor and I think I remember it correctly. If you have any concerns or questions find someone to demonstrate the correct method and save your arm and wrist.

make sure you have spark, the spray out of the carb is normal, I usually pull up 4 times with spray comming from the carb, the take the choke off.. and my B will start up, like others have said only pull up, never wrap your thumb, be careful, I broke my arm 15 years ago cranking my b, was because I took her for granted... just a little backfire and was a trip to the ER (after I finished unloading a wagon of hay)

Thanks to farmallhal. I followed all the precautions you mention. I was very worried about my thumb, I've heard some horror stories. I read in one of my Owners Manuals the proper procedure to follow. I'm not to sure about the push-pull switch you mention. Whats there isn't exactly as you describe, please see one of my other responses. I feel kinda stupid posting this question.

Does this mean you have it started now? Don't feel bad about your post as sometimes the simple things are easily overlooked. I don't know how many times I've forgot (getting better now) to turn on the fuel valve. My Farmalls are the only tractors I keep them closed on when not in use. Enjoy your tractor and my first tractor driving experience was on a Farmall A when I was 5 or 6 with my Grandpa. Farmalls have been my favorites since those early days.

Do you have spark, do you have a mag, or battery ignition, after you are sure it's out of gear, is there a little round button below the stearing wheel to pull out before you try cranking it...

YES, there is a button. Kinda looks like what you see on a lawnmower. It's a cable within a coiled wire. When you pull it, it barely moves a rod like piece on the mag. I must sound like a moron, but I own 2 other Farmalls (Super C and a Cub) both elec. start and I have no problem but have never started a tractor with a crank.

It sounds like you have the rare early style ground switch on your magneto. Yes it is a cable like a lawnmower. But i think the switch works the same as the later style, pull to run, push to stop.

Ignition switch must be pulled out to be on. My W6 always starts with about half choke, 1/4 throttle, one good crank.

quit choking it. it is flooded. Try waiting a while. turn off the gas at the tank. try starting it. if it starts then open the gas. You might have to take the plugs out and dry them if you have it flooded realy bad but I doubt it.

Listen to Cowman. turn on the ignition. Turn on the gas (wait about 20 seconds). Choke it for only one pull up on the crank or the danged thing is likely to flood all over the place. Then full off choke. It should fire within 3 or four pulls up. When you turn the girl off, turn off the gas and let it starve itself to stop then turn off the ignition. When you stop it that way, you always start with a known quantity of gas in the carb (none). Every tractor starts differently. The known fuel in the carb allows one less variable. Soon you will be starting it on the second or third pull. Keep your thumb on the same side of the crank as your fingers and try to avoid spinning the crank.

Oh, and post a picture.

I don't see an ignition switch anywhere. There is only a pull cord that goes to the magneto. I crank it over once with the choke on and it literally "shoots" gas from the carb.

Make sure there is no wire connected to the magnito that is grounded (the afore mentioned ignition switch is just a "kill switch") The cord going to the mag - is it a wire? If so, make sure it is not touching ground.

If it is all ready flooded turn ff the gas, drain the carb and crank pulling up wards only (1/2 turns) until it fires. When it starts quickly turn the gas back on.

Make sure you have spark coming from the mag. Is the cord going to the mag an actual cord or a grounding wire?
