Thanks to all who replied for my 454 problem. I tore the cover off the speed trans last night (finally got some nice weather). Everything looks good but a piece of white metal was jammed inbeteween the gears..... From the manual it looks like a piece that is on the shift cam (piece with the two groves). What's left of the piece is somewhat moon shaped and has a hole in the center.. the hole will slide down over the one dial in the trans cover. Some kind of shift lock?

Hi Joe, great news that you found the problem.
At least you will not have to split the 454.

What all did you have to remove to get the top off the speed transmission?

I had to remove the entire dash tower asembly. Just enuf to where I could lay it over on the side. Battery tray, disconnect a couple lines going over the top of the speed transmission. Gas, brake, and a hydrolic line. Sounds worse than it actually was. I think it was more trouble getting the shift cam to let go of the shift rail so I could take the cover plate off. That and getting everything lined back up to set the cover plate back on.

I took it out for a test run last night and everything seems to be working great. It does have a bit of a knock in the speed trans when the clutch is engaged, don't notice it as must at higher speeds.... but after seeing what was left of the shifter piece and knowing that it didn't break a tooth I'm not going to complain!

Hi Joe, wonderful news, now your an expert on speed transmissions.

I would not worry about the knocking noise as my brother's 454 will do that if you leave the speed transmission in 4th gear and the range transmission in neutral and clutch released. It has being doing it for 15 years now and still running.
