CUB CUTTING OUT

I just purchased a nice looking Farmall Cub last weekend and am trying to get it running right. It starts and runs, buts the engine cuts out for few seconds, then will run smoothly again and then cut out again. It will go back and forth like this constantly. Sometimes it will sit and run for a minute or two and then start cutting out again. Any ideas? It is a 1948 with Magneto ignition. I pulled off the fuel line and it has a nice full stream of fuel. I cleaned and rebuilt the carb with no help. I even replaced the carburator with one off another newer cub I have and it still does the same thing. Could it be the coil or some other ignition problem?

How about a intake manifold leak?. Start the ol girl and take a propane torch and turn on the propane with out lighting it and run it around the block where the intake hooks and it will change rpms if there is a leak, I supose it could be eratic spark or bad tune up parts if you need anything for the mag just let me know. Parts, Rebuilding , or anything . I guess its going to be a trial and error thing. JON

Magman, I tryed spraying WD-40 around the manifold when it was running, but the fan just blew it away. I will try to sheild the fan airflow and try the propane method. Thanks.

That's because you weren't using the little tube. The new cans of WD40 put out a fine, wide spray without the little tube, not the directed stream you need to overcome the fan.

Apparently the formula for wd-40 has changed over the years. I can no longer get it to work checking for intake leaks. I have moved on to carb cleaner, it finds them where wd-40 won't. just my opinion, Kevin

I was told they stopped using propane as a propellant.

I agree it sure sounds like a fuel problem, since it seems to run well when it's not cutting out. I will try the light on the plugs to see If the spark is consistant. Thanks.
