I notice oil comming from (I think) from the Head Gasket of my Farmall H. It is wet near the back of the engine to around plug #4. It looks like oil is comming out from the head gasket . I think my head gasket is metal on both sides. It looks to be comming out of the gasket material part. Are there any oil passages near the back of the engine to around the #4 plug? I also use to spray my tractor engine pretty good with WD40 every year it was not used and stored in a shed, could this oil be WD40 working its self out of the gasket when the engine gets hot? Thanks!!

After I rebuilt the motor on my H, the head gasket leaked oil on the spark plug side. After retorquing the head, it slowed down. Next time I adjust the valves, I'll retorque the head again, and I hope that will fix it. If not, the tractor does not use a quart between oil changes, which is not too bad, it just looks messy.

John, it won't be wd40 that you are seeing. Usually a bad head gasket will show up as coolant in the crankcase. I am thinking of two or three possibilities. On the H air breather system there is a tube from the back of the head into the breather casing, a system for crankcase ventilation. Check there as it could be leaking condensed oil on the back or side of the head. Another possibility is the valve cover gasket leaking enough oil down that it gathers on the edge of the head gasket and appears to be coming from the head gasket. And as you mentioned a hot engine will spread oil far and wide from its source. Check out the things I have mentioned first befor deciding on a new head gasket..good luck...Mike in Exeter Ontario

I had a head gasket on my car that leaked oil down the back of the engine for at least 60,000 miles. It had to let go around an oil passage during times of high pressure (sub zero start up).It would lose about a quart every month. When I tore it down, the gasket was all soggy.I blame that one on a cheapo OEM original gasket (not that your oem gasket was junk).Like when Chrysler forced their gasket supplier to cheapen head gaskets on their 2.2 engine before they hit the streets.Chrysler saved a couple dollars a gasket, the supplier didnt want to cut the quality, and thousands of 2.2 owners later absorbed the cost of gasket replacement after warranty expiration.
