My Super A (with the higher compression piston/sleeve upgrade) developed a random miss, after 25 years of great performance. I want to try a hotter plug than the Champion D15Y that I'm now using. Any suggestions?

Ed

Ed: I've been running Champion D-16 for years. My Super A, 130 and 140 all have D-16, and most of them 5 years old by now. I never experience any misfiring. I will admit when I used the SA and 130 commercially I did change plugs every two years or so. I regularly see guys on discussions running down Champions. I have great luck with them. D-16 worked well for me back when these tractors were new and they still work well for me. Rarely do I ever have a problem running or starting.

I will add this, until I changed my tractors to alternator charging, I had all kinds of problems. I think I have a bushel of old electrical parts from those generator days. In my opinion most of those old generator systems are only half working, batteries are never up to full charge, thus nothing ever works 100%.

If your plugs look like deposits are built up you may need one range hotter but be careful to remove and read the new plug after a short run.I have holed a freinds pistons with an incorrect heat range and had to swap out his motor for a spare I had.Not my best mechanical judgement call.

I can get rid of the miss temporarily by cleaning the plugs, but it comes back after a few days. Come to think of it, it seems to be worse with this (relativly new) set of plugs.

I'll try a hotter plug. Thanks.
Ed

The miss is likely not plug related, but Champion plugs get hotter as the number goes up -- I think D23 is the hottest, a lot of people use D21, some say to toss them and get another brand, I have had no problems with them.

My Super C is running sooty on a fairly new set of Champion D-18Y's which were installed by the prior owner. I have been advised to use D-21's but was wondering what the "Y" suffix is all about? Your response would be most appreciated.
