Questions about my 826.

I have a 1970 IH 826 Diesel that I am beginning a refurb and have a few questions.

I need to confirm the voltage and cold cranking amps on this thing in order to get the right batteries. I think that it is a 6-volt system, but not sure.

The ether assist never worked, but I would like to get it into working order prior to selling. I have no idea what I am looking at as far as how to troubleshoot it and figure out what to replaced. I have looked on a few websites that retail parts for IH's and have found nothing and have checked at all of the salvage yards in my area (NE Texas) with no luck on an 826. Anyone know of any online sources. Also, will it cross over to any other models as far as parts?

The tractor has been setting up without being cranked for over seven years (I know, I know) and I was wondering if I needed to go to any further lengths other than changing the oil, oil filter, drain fuel system, fresh fuel and fuel filters. Do I need to add an upper cylinder lube or such? Should I turn it over by hand before trying to crank it?

I also have a question about painting the tractor. On the parts that are not sheet metal... will Simple Green or such product sufficiently prep the surface or do I need to take further steps?

Sorry for the long line questions. But I will probably have more as I go. I hope that the good members of this forum will indulge me.

monty, the 826 is a 12 volt neg ground. it uses 2 6 volt batteries in series, although some have been changed to use 1 12 volt battery (requires modifying the battery carrier box).

ether: any unit from 56, 66, 86, or 88 series should work. as far as checking the one you have, you need juice to the push button (from the key, i believe), then push button to one side of unit, and i think the other side of unit should go to ground.

i'm not an expert on painting, so i'll leave that for someone else. as far as starting it, i'd say you have done what i would do. if that isn't enough, i'm sure we'll hear about it from someone else.

you can also use 2 12 volt batteries in parralel (hooked both pos to starter, neg posts grounded) i believe stock batt's are either 2E or 3E in series(neg grounded pos to neg pos to starter) and that the 12v with the same size case are 2EE and 3EE(may be wrong on the 12v). I you get 3E batteries and they touch the fuel tank TAKE THEM BACK! our 756 had that problem and it turned into a fuel fire problem.

leave the fuel shut off and crank it till it builds oil pressure. I'm assuming it needs batteries so they shouldn't be a problem. If once you give it fuel and it doesn't start to smoke while cranking and it's got a german engine (it will say german bosch or bosch of germany or some such a thing on a small horizontal fuel pump) you may have to loosen a bunch of fuel lines to let air out of the pump or you may get away with just cracking an injector line loose to prime it. It only takes one to let the air out and it just needs to be loose (Not removed, just the nut loosened) once it takes off shut it down to retighten the line as fuel will be spraying.
