cuts out....gas?

My 53 super C starts good but after only ten minutes, it dies. If I disengage the mower as soon as I hear that it is about to stall, it will continue running but only if I then throttle it down near idle. After letting it sit for (turned off) for about 15 min, I can start it and mow again for about 5-10 min. I opened the fuel filter bowl and cleaned the screen and also put in some concentrated carburetor cleaner but it did not help. I assume that it is the carburetor but I am hoping someone will guide me with suggestions. Thank you in advance for any comments. Todd

I didn"t read all the posts, so maybe this has been suggested already, but could there be a restriction in the neck of the sediment bowl under the tank. I"ve had problems here many times with crud preventing fuel from getting out fo the tank into the bowl.

The next time it does that, loosen the gas cap and see if things are normal again.
Like Neb, Cowman said, probably pluged vent in gas cap.

Does the Super C have an inlet screen filter where the line goes into the carb like some other carbs? If so, it might be partially clogged.

I'm not sure. Is it a larger diameter than the fuel line? If so, I don't think so. The glass bowl directly under the tank has a sreen which I cleaned and then a fuel line from there to the carb. When I disconnected the line right where it enters the carb, fuel poured freely. Thanks for your help. Todd

Sounds to me like the float in the carb might be sticking, Might just need to do a through cleaning of the carb and see if that don"t take care of your problem. So you can mow that grass before it gets too high!!:)

another thing to check is the vent on the gas cap.

If you take the plug out of the fuel bowl when it dies, do you get a good steady stream of fuel ? If so, it might be a bad coil.

I"m not sure where the plug is. Should I disconnect the fuel line where it connects to the carb to check for flow?

There is a hex headed plug in the front of the float bowl (on my '53 C any way). It is at the bottom on the centerline. Gas should run out in a steady stream for several minutes. Don't do this on the lawn...

That would be a good place to check the gas flow.
If ok, I would replace the condenser and then the coil if the new condenser doesn't help. Hal

The flow is good going into the carb. When it starts to cut out, I sprayed starting fluid into the intake and it kept running. Doesn't that mean that it is a fuel problem (in carb)? I will be glad to replace the condensor and coil if needed. If they are bad, why would it run good for a short period after sitting? I don't doubt you, I am just trying to get educated. Thanks so much. Todd (and wife who can't wait to see 18" tall grass get cut :-(

Sounds like a fuel problem. Is your intake manifold tight? Has your carburetor been cleaned?
Try running the engine with the choke on and see if the engine runs better. If it does your carburetor is too lean. If your carburetor has the main jet adjusting screw on the carburetor bowl, you may need to open it CCW and see if that helps. I wouldn't use too much of that starting
fluid on the engine. Hal

It's a fuel flow issue inside the carburetor.

A bad coil will overheat and stop working, but once you let it cool down, it'll work again for a while.

Are you saying that it could be either the coil or fuel flow in the carb?

If I was saying that, I would've said that, but I didn't.

I clearly said it's a fuel flow problem.

I was also explaining WHY a tractor could have a bad coil or condensor, and still run.

I ASSUME YOU HAVE A DIST., AND NOT A MAG. IF SO, FOR NO MORE THAT IT COSTS, DO A COMPLETE TUNE UP. POINTS, PLUGS, COND.,AND COIL. IF YOU ARE GETTING THE GAS FROM THE CARB AS YOU SAY, I,M BETTING SHE RUNS O.K.GOOD LUCK, FRANK. P.S.LET US KNOW THE OUTCOME
