Is it really necessary to polarize a generator any time the battery is disconnected? What is a easy method to check for charging. I don't think my ammeter is bad but battery always needs charged up to start.

Put a volt meter across the battery terminals and
with the engine at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle read your battery voltage. On a 6 volt system should read
7 to 7.5 volts and on a 12 volt between 13.5 to 14.5 volts. If the charging voltage looks ok your battery probably needs replacing. Hal

The charging system on the Bs must have a good ground from the control panel to charge correct. Sounds like the batt is junk as a good charged batt will start several times even without a generator working. Do you have a regulator or is it the cutout?

In reality the only time a generator needs to be polarized is after it's been disassembled and rebuilt, after it's replaced with a different generator, or after the tractor has been struck by lightning (don't ask how I know...) However since polarizing only takes a few seconds and is easy to do, it doesn't hurt to repolarize after disconnecting/reconnecting the battery.

Having a working ammeter on the tractor - and paying attention to it - is the best way to determine whether the battery is being charged when the tractor is running.

If your battery must be continually recharged in order to start your tractor, either your tractor's charging system is NOT working or the battery is on it's last legs.
