I've got a 1950 M that I'm in the process of going through to restore and a small problem has come up that I need some help with. The seal for the belt pulley leaks and I want to replace it. I have the three bolts out of the shaft housing but the shaft is not coming out as I think it should. I've tapped it out to the point the outer bearing is showing but it is very tight and I don't want to force it and break something. Thanks in advance for any help.

After restoring two green tractors I'm really impressed with the outstanding quality and engineering on these "Red" tractors. I won't be going back.

From sunny Ohio-
Craig

It'll come out. The bearing' outer race may be a little dry in the housing. Tap the hub out evenly all around enough to get two pry bars on opposite sides of the flange and pry it out. Careful not to damage the shims. Note the alignment of the shims when you put it back together as the return oil goes through a little hole in the flange. The bevel gear is a @@#$%^& tch get off. you will need a press. Good luck.

The driven shaft and 3 bolt cover should come right out. Tap on the pulley flange evenly around. You might have to pry the 3 bolt cover away from the main body. place a drain tub under the flange because a quart of lube will fall to the floor. Good luck.

Hi Craig, I ain't sure about the belt pulley but I do know what you mean about the red vs green! Lots more fun to restore and parts don't cost an arm and a leg. Good luck!

I kept working it and it finally popped out. I think I had it cocked to one side. Thanks for the info on working both sides. I"m glad I have a press available- that bevel gear IS tight. While we"re on the subject of belt pulleys- How are they to be finished? Mine is in real good shape and I very lightly sand blasted the outside. It"s a real nice white color. The paper shows some wear but not bad for 51 years old. Guy Fay"s book doesn"t say and I"ve seen a lot of different ways to paint them. Some were left with the paper surface white, some black and some red. Any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Still sunny in Ohio-
Craig
