Got the old IH 300 U back together and tried to crank the engine over using 12v on 6v starter. I heard many folks do this. Engine would not crank until I removed the plugs then is spun fairly decent. I removed the starter and cleaned all connections, brushes and inspected the windings. The thing didn’t look bad, but still no luck cranking the engine over with compression. Has anyone ever towed a tractor to see if the engine would start before investing any more money in the thing?

Yes, I have towed tractors to get them started, a lot! As long as you know that the engine is free and the ignition timing is close, there should not be a problem towing it. I usually use the highest gear, but if you can’t get enough cranking speed, you can try the next lower gear. The rear wheels may slide, if they do you can try using the starter to help get them rolling.

Now, 12 volts on a 6 volt starter should spin that engine over and fast! Either you have a low battery, poor connections, too light a cables (way to light) or there is a starter problem.

Thanks,
I cranked her long enough to get some oil pressure. Cables got a little warm and discharged the old 76 Dodge Power Wagon dual batterys, so I'm going to assume the starter has got an internal stator winding short. I'll put the wife in the Dodge with a loooong chain and see what happens.

Thanks again,
Joe

Sounds like maybe you did not have a battery in the tractor. If not, you need a good battery on the tractor and not just jumper cables.

You may find if you just put a good 12v battery in it it will spin just fine.

Even a low battery and jumper cables in much better than jumper cables alone.

Just a friendly thought make sure the TA handle is forward before towing.

What would happen if I pulled the TA while towing? Would it free wheel?

Yes and you could damage the TA also. DO NOT PULL IT WHILE TOWING! (Not trying to shout but it's important.

Oh ya, not to mention that with the wife driving the Dodge it may throw me off the back of the tractor then she would have a mad 300 U chasing her, then she would be REALLY pissed.
