Foolish question, but here it goes. Getting ready to replace all gaskets, how does someone tell easily if the model is with or without a water pump?? I hope to degrease the engine, replace gaskets, and all fluids, plugs and wires, adjust govenor settings. Any other helpful hints are greatly appreciated.

Bill,

Important tip I learned from nearest IH parts man in NE WI when I worked on my 1948 SA a couple of years ago. The head gasket for the SA with thermosiphon cooling (no H2O pump) has larger holes for coolant circulation than the gasket for the SA with H2O pump. You want no restrictions in a thermosiphon cooling system. He stocked both gaskets and showed me the difference. Don't be fooled if someone tries to tell you that they're the same.

Bill: On tractors with no water pump the main large fan belt just goes around crank and fan pullies. With the water pump there is a 3 pulley for the water pump just below the generator or alternator which ever you have. So main large fan belt goes around crank, fan and water pump pullies. Water pump bolts right to block, thus you have a very short hose from pump to rad at lower rad hook up.

With out a water pump will only have a top and bottom hose,,, with a water pump will have additional smaller diameter hoses on the front of the engine block.

You got your engines mixed up there are no small hoses on a SA same hoses as one without a water pump. Gasket is the same just need a longer fan belt.
