Only question I have is did you inspect the cylinder thoroughly? Such as using a bore guage checking for elongation and damage to the walls. I think that is what Allen in NE was referring to about changing out the sleeves alot of times its better to change them out than risk issues after your done that can make you sick.

The best thing you can do to help your rings seat is to put the engine under a good load. (make the engine work hard). Make sure you watch the temperature closely if you just put it together, because the engine will create more heat. This is caused because the rings scrubbing against the cylinders are actually creating more friction, until they wear to match the cylinder wall. Working the engine creates more pressure against the rings and forces them into cylinder walls harder. This makes the rings seat sooner. Failure to do this will allows the rings to smooth out (glaze) to much and not seat well. If you have anymore questions regarding above statement, just e-mail me. I have rebuilt many car/truck, tractor and aircraft engines. The only engine I lost was in my stock car. Gene

You should stop immediately. The American Lung Association has found it to cause cancer.

Jackson,

You didn't just put in a set of rings against an old set of sleeves did ya?

It shouldn't smoke at all.

Allan

Golly, that's the way I do it, with old pistons. A little smoke is good for an engine
:-)

If it goes away when it is warm, as you say, then you do not have a problem. The rings will seat.

Depends on "a little". I did the motor in my 46 H and the only smoke I got was a little at start up the first time for about 2 minutes, probably the STP I had dipped pistons rings in at assembly. It will take a little time for the rings to seal real good, but any excessive smoke or continuance of , i would say pull the head and check things out. Smoke at start up ussually means ya got oil leaking past the valves into the cylinders and valve ports. If a gas engine smokes , its getting oil some where

What do you mean by 'smokes' ?

Mine gives a puff of black smoke if I go from idle to WTO, at times, but it never produced much oil smoke once the oil burned off the pistons and cylinders. I do still get an oily smell out of the breather right after I change oil and work it hard.

If you have not worked it hard, the rings may not be seated yet. The instructions that come with the IH pistons and sleeves say to work it up to full rated power in several steps over an hour or so.

Did you hone the cylinders? Did you stagger the ring gaps?
