Well, Here is where I am. I now have spark at the plugs. The plugs are old..so I'm going to replace them. It still won't start. I want you guys to double check my procedure here:
1) pulled the rotor button off.
2) pulled the plate off (has a little gear in it)
off that covers the points.
3) cleaned them and noticed a mark on the little
gear. Timing mark I guess.

4) well, there was no mark on the rotor button gear. But on the outside of the rotor button
there is what looked like a mark to me. So I matched that up with the little gear mark and put it back together. At least now I have spark. My question is, Did I do the timing procedure correct?

Thanks,
WOD

You should not be able to miss the timing marks. The little gear has a line on top and the rotor butten has a line on it that you can follow too. I beleve its right behind the tang . mesh em up sounds like you might be 180 off you can change the plug wire 180 to see on the cap if it runs you will know what you have to do. MagMan

Are you sure you have the plugs wires connected
to the right plugs? No1 plug wire should be connected to No1 spot on the cap, then #3, #4 and
#2 as viewed CW. If this ok, your timing may be off. Remove No1 plug and crank engine over until compression is felt, slowly have someone slowly keep cranking until timing mark notch on the pulley is aligned with pointer. Then see if the
rotor is pointing to No1 wire in the cap. Hal

Well, I put in the new plugs and still won't start. I think the timing if off because it
backfired once at first and then just turned
over and no attempt to start at all.

Thanks,
WOD

That a real good read. I'm still a litle confused
though. When I removed the rotor and metal gear,
it should not have disrupted the magneto timing since it was not removed. The part I need to do is time the rotor with the meatl gear. How can I just do that? Any ideas?

Thanks,
WOD

There is a notch on one tooth of the drive gear. It lines up with the line on the back of the rotor. Note, it can be 180 degrees out, so may have to do it twice to get it right.
