"slowly idle down"

Is the throttle lever moving, or is the tractor idling down on its own? You've got two contradictory trains of advice below.

I had the same problem with my super M while I was rebuilding her, I used a metal chop saw to recut the notches in the upper plate, then I also took the small bolt out of the throttle lever,(the part that goes into the notches) welded it back up to where it should have been, then filed it back to a rectangular shape, took all of 15 min.... good luck

Does it have a throttle with teeth or a friction throttle? If teeth they may be worn, if friction aftermarket it may just need to bolt tightened up some or a new leather friction washer, you can get it at any hardware store in the hardware assortment section.

So if it is not notched it is an aftermarket item? What would be the purpose of it being different? Will get a washer and see if that helps.
I also have a 3 slot box that controls the hydraulicsand never seen it on another SM ,not that I have seen alot of sm.I am assumming it is a 3 way valve tho it is only hooked to my 3 pt.Anyone else have one? thanks

Those symptoms are common for a tractor of that age, but definately not normal. You've got some wear in the governor. A new governor spring may cure it, or the problem may be deeper. You might want to search the archives for Farmall governor. There is way more info there than I can possibly list here. Your problem is not serious, the tractor will most likely run for a long time, but it is very annoying, and it won't get better.

All we ever did was file the notches and mabe a bend here and there to keep the throttle from jumping out and shutting down. This on a SM.
