I know this has been discussed several times on here, so if I may ask one more time for some expert advice. I have a 43 "H" and I want to convert it to 12 volts, and I want to try to keep from doing to much fab work on an alternator bracket. What is a good altenator to fit under the hood? What do I do about a coil, I know I need to install some resistance in the circuit, but where? Do I need to go to a 12 Volt coil? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Dick: I quite agree with others on alternator suggestions, however I would go to CaseIH and get a 12 volt coil that requires no resistor. Those damn add on resistors are trouble in my opinion. I had one when I first did my conversion. When it got thrown in garbage, troubles ended.

I've heard that the regular Delso 10SI works, but is tight. You can also use an alternator from any small import car. An old Toyota alternator works fine. Don't worry about the alternator capacity - even an old 37 amp alternator will give you plenty - twice the power out of a 6 volt generator. As for brackets, you can usually use the same lower bracket by simply using all-thread and spacers. The upper bracket is not a big problem. Find a piece of 3/16 inch by 3/4 inch steel and bend it as you need to.

You will need to add a ballast resistor in series with your coil. An inexpensive MOPAR resistor works. If you want to installation to be cleaner, you can buy a real 12 volt coil. Be sure to get one that specifies "no resistor needed".

Good luck.

A Delco will fit, but if you decide to try the Japanese alternator I have one still in the NAPA box. jwc1934@aol.com.

I've had good luck with useing an alternator from a toyota pickup. They fit under the hood well and not hard to hook up. You can even use the same mounts as the genny just need a long bolt if I remember right. As far as the coil you just need to get a balast resistor and put it in line with the coil. One for a dodge works well.
