I recently purchased a Farmall M that has been converted to 12v. When stepping on the starter, it tends to turn the engine once or twice, then stop. I lift my foot and do it again. After 2-3 tries, fires right up. Unfortunately, it now does nothing at all (except for one time yesterday it fired it up). No clicking, no sound period. Charged battery and checked cables and everything looks fine. Has the starter gone bad?

Have battery checked. Sounds like maybe failing under load. Put Voltmeter across battery terminals and see if severe voltage drop when hit starter.

Could be the switch, solenoid, starter, or something else not completing the circuit. You need to get a light tester on the starter's big hot wire terminal and see if it lights up when you hit the starter button. If it does and the starter still doesn't turn then the starter itself is shot.

Have you checked the ignition timing? It sounds like an overadvanced spark fighting back against the starter.
Is the battery in good condition & charged?
