PTO question

Bought a 1939 F-20. After changing all the fluids, she started right up. The problem is when I engaged the pto, nothing happened. As I let out on the clutch, the engine begins to idle very low so I know the gears are engaged, but nothing turns. I do not want to let out on the clutch all the way in fear of snapping something in the gear housing. The tractor sat for years in a barn before being bought. The owner had passed away so it is unknown if it worked when it was parked in the barn. What should I check or look for first? I don't know that much about pto systems. It does have a belt pulley on it, if that matters. Thanks!

Not a mechanic but did a lot of our own fixes on the farm growing up.
I would try jacking up one side of the rear, out it in high gear, engage the PTO, then rock the raised tire back & forth to see if the PTO shaft moves at all before I got brave to let out the clutch. Just might break loose!!

Hello,
With the Gears as Gregg said have someone hold down the clutch then you can feel and here if anything is binding because just the rearend tranny and pto are turning. Have a good one Mark
