I'm fairly new to this forum, but it seems to me that you guys have a pile of knowledge and ability. If that same knowledge had been available in the 40s 50s and 60s maybe the old Farmalls and McCormicks would still be doing ALL the work.

This forum has helped me many times in the last few years too. The most recent was where to get repairs for my Char Lynn power steering for my Super M. First time it hasn't leaked for years!

Many Thanks,
Bob

Bob,

Looky here, seems to me we're now going in circles, as I recall you were one of the guys that led me by the hand. :>)

Okay, here I go again. My torque motor was a used one off a M that was setting in a salvage yard. It works fine unless I get up against the stops, then it "seeps" out the upper shaft seal.

Did you just replace the complete motor or did ya reseal it? Looks like a bugger to rebuild?

Maybe I'm just getting old 'er something, but I'll never own another tractor without that power steering. My little H is a pure "joy" to run under the loader and now acts just like one of the big boys. Little stinker impresses me every time I crawl on it. :>)

Hi Allen,

The repair kit will take care of that leak easily. The part number is 21122 and cost about $25 and is pretty easy to install. All you need to do is to mark the outside of the motor so that the pieces keep their alignment. I replace those little bolts with bolts that have a socket (allen wrench) head just to make things easier. The local automotive parts house had the bolts on hand. My dad and I used our Super M's without the hood on them for years because the power steering leaked and it was a pain to keep removing the hood to fill the power steering. I wish we would have found this kit years ago!

E-mail me if you want a point of contact for the kit. Don't want to upset anyone by sounding like an advertisement.

Spending the day with my Cub Cadet 122 mowing.
Bob

A few years back I needed to know how to repair a 1950's era Seeburg jukebox. The forum I used at the time was an e-mail forum, but it worked well enough to get me through all my problems and I disassembled, cleaned and repaired the old machine and have been able to keep it running since. Every few years those people would take their best questions and the answers and put them into a manual format and sell it as a supplement to the service manuals. People that operate this site should consider it. There is a pile of knowledge. I personally keep the best responses to my own questions in a folder along with my tractor manual.

Hi Kruss,

Boy, these guys have sure have helped me a lot.

First, they showed me how to strap that live hydraulic pump and power steering on my little H.

Made a totally different tractor out of the H and boy am I impressed! Too bad IH didn't have this option back then; would have doubled their sales. :>)

Next, they put up with my whining and complaining for months, no, years on end about how the German 310 smokes at startup. Showed me how to just "ignore and accept" it for the way it was designed.

Glad they did too (I almost sold the blue-tinted, cloudy thing), 'cause in retrospect, I've got to admit, the old 656 never, ever had the gonads this 686 does. Boy, do I like the way this thing pulls! :>)

Yepper, this be a darned good place to hang out. :>)

Lou,

I did mine in about 10 minutes 'cause my tractor's serial number was high enough that I didn't need to change the timing gears and the front cover.

Just pulled the distributor adaptor off and replaced it with the live pump. Two gaskets and six bolts.

Allan:

Where do i find that pump and how high does the serial number on the H have to be, also, how do you put PS on one of those H's Live hydraulics and power steering would make a fencing tractor for me instead of using my 856.

I wish all the little tips, tricks and whatnot that the old timers have learned, but aren't included in manuals could somehow be recorded before they pass on and we lose all that experience forever.

Kruss, I believe all the knowledge was even out there in those years. It just took something like the Internet to bring it to light in a usable format and available to the masses.

Believe me most of us have learned what we know by way of the road of hard knocks. And when we are lucky we remember how we did things to get the old iron up and running again. Back then we had to do it all by our self we didn't have this fancy computer to ask questions.
