I have a problem when i am mowing and i run uphill it sometimes acts as if it"s loosing fuel. it does"nt do it all the time but mostly on uphill it chugs and coughs a few times then levels out . usually when i hit a thick patch it has a hard time keeping upand sometimes actually dies. the grass isn"t tall and it does"nt help to run more rpms. running in 1"st gear also does it.

Robert: Don't rule out fire just yet. While I must agree with the others on fuel problems. I had similar problems with my SA some years ago. I chased fuel problems for quite some time before I decided fuel was not the problem.

I would start to loose power and misfire on hills, on bumps and even on down grade. My problem turned out to be a worn distributor shaft. While tractor was sitting level or driving over smooth level surface, it worked perfect. Just remove the diatributor cap, check for end play as well as up and down. Rebuilt the distributor and cured my SA.

Just another suggestion, one I wouldn't overlook.

I hav'nt ruled out anything yet. I did some mowing today and beleive it is fuel related couse i could feather the choke and control some of the surging. finally died and seen some trash in the sediment bowl. tank probabably needs a goog cleaning. i know muratic acid eats rust but will have to nutralize with water. any good cleaners thet would be better?

Robert: Rust in the tank, could well be the problem. I have seen that close off the stem to sediment bowl, to a point tractor was not getting enough fuel.

If you go back in archives here at YT there was a discussion re: placing pea stones in a tank, mounting on a wleel so it can be turned slow, speed of a cement mixer. The tumbling effect of the stones loosened the rust and was able to flush it out. Probably back about 2 years ago.

Before I rebuilt mine, the valves would get hot & stick while mowing uphill, After it cooled down a little it would run fine. It might be a fuel flow problem too, take the fuel bowl down, & get a piece of hose that will fit over the fuel outlet. Blow back into the hose, & see if it unclogs the drain hole. If that"s it, you just need to clean the tank. If it"s sticking valves, start using some lead substiture.

You may need to check your tank/fuel line to make sure you don't have anything that will cause a clog, I've seen that more then once, you may have a floating clog.

I've had the floating clog problem on a wd allis. This does'nt loose flow ,couse i pulled the sediment bowl and there is good flow there.
I have put some lucas product in the gas and i dont notice any difference.this old tractor does puff smoke at idle so i know it needs some work. Just dont have time right now to do a rebuild,i plan on restoreing it.
