I know that the DT 414 has cheaper spare parts than the DT 407 but how about fuel thirst and torque? DT 414 makes 530 nm but how about DT 407? And at last the durability, has the DT 407 any weak points? If any body who could compare those two engines
could fill me in I would be very much obliged.

what we have found is the 407 uses a little more than the DT414 in most cases.
both are fairly durable but the 407 will almost always out last the 414.
make sure the 414 has a water filter and it should look as though it has been changed not too long ago.
we generally change the water filter every 200 hours and do a water sample every 100 and it stays in spec.
if they get out of spec the sleeves start to pit and once they start it is only a matter of time.
the only weak points i know of on the 407 are the fact that don't don't start good in cold weather and they are prone to break a push rod every now and then.
other than that i can't think of a thing,our 1456 has around 13,000 hours on it and aside from some head work it has never been tore down.
and it pulled at 4500 rpm for a couple of summers.

The 407's only week point is top end horsepower. I have been told they are higher than the 400 series to get the hp out of for pulls or what not. They run forever, even if they didn't have the best of care. Look up 1066s and see how many had overhauls at around 5000 hours. Not all or anything, but you will find quite a few. Just about the only 407 or 361s that get touched have a ton (10,000-15,000-20,000) of hours, or the owner got bored and overhauled it one winter. The cam is a little hard to find, as is a block or head or crank. Not hard in the sense that you can't find them, just a little hard on the pocket book. An overhaul kit really isn't much more that the 400 series.

As far as torque, I don't know. I was told on another board the 407 had a shorter stroke, which should mean a quicker response. This came up on the red power site and many guys favored the 407 unless your going to pull it, and no one had a bad word to say about one.

One guy commented he had seen one 407 not make it to 10000 hours, and he had seen a pile of 414s not make it much past 5000.

Don"t have any specs on hand, but a 407 will have a little less torque, but will burn less fuel. Both are very durable, but 407"s have been known to last an extremly long time if cared for.
