I had a 5th gear that is not staying in gear on an H Farmall. I was told to take the belt pulley off & check it. The gear looks bad & I need to replace it. Previously a guy said I don't need to split the tractor to replace it. Please advise.

Replace the Pilot Bearing and clean that area up while you are in there. It has a tendancy to hold grime and gunk in that area. Also replace any oil seal you even look at. You want to only drop that belly pump once. It is nasty. Yank the bolts and run. Do not lay under it thinking you can hold it up. Blacksmith's can....not you or me.

If you take the tranny top off, check the springs and detent balls in the cover where the shifter comes in. Clean them up and lubricate them too. That area gets completely neglected in my view.

Buy gasket material at the auto store and make your own gaskets. Just use the old one as a template and cut them out. Use RTV sealer.

Now is a good time to drain your tranny fluid and replace it. Do not drop parts down in there if you do not drain it. It has fishing beat all to heck.

Be careful working with the parts. Most are not made anymore and finding replacements can be done but it is time-consuming.

Have fun and let us know how it goes!

Scott

You don't need to split the tractor - you do need to drop the Liftall unit and take the deck off the transmission/rear end. The IH Blue Ribbon Service Manual is invaluable.
When I did mine I went ahead and ordered both the gear and the shaft with which it couples. Don't. it seems the splines in the female end (the gear) were worn to nubs but the splines on the male side were in good shape. They're supposed to be rounded on the end.

you will have to take the transmission top cover off. sometimes it isn't the geat that is bad but the shifter. mine did this and i had to replace the shifter no the gear. it is a big job so go slow and make sure you remove the steering shaft supports belt pulley etc.....it is best to have a parts book and the service guide too.

Manuals are good. I only had the IT manual when I did mine. Once you get the top cover off, it is not so bad. If you had the parts you needed, it would only take half a day. Do check all the bearings while you are in there.
