Put a new sediment bowl on my Farmall H. Used that regular white thread tape. Seems gasoline just seeps right past. What thread compound should a fella use on gas line to keep from leaking?

I agree... Rectorseal pipe compound, not teflon tape.

Rectoseal #5 - I hate the teflons, makes it too easy to over-tighten.

I agree with the Rectorseal. I use it for all pipe threads, fuel, air, hydraulic, fertilizer and sprayer fittings all get it and I've never had it fail yet. I've used teflon tape in the past but it's a pain to use and doesn't work as well as Rectorseal.

I'm a big fan of tape, but it didn't work on my sediment bowl -- went with putty.

I agree with Lee. Get a good plumbers pipe dope that is teflon based. These are a Teflon Emulsion. Best source is at the home supply store like Lowe's or Home Depot. It's in the plumbing section. A good brand is Rectorseal number 5. Several numbers of the Rectorseal depending on the application.

I can't think of a good use for tape unless you like to re-do things a second or third time to get it right. Most times it works but often it can leak where a good pipe dope with teflon just plain works unless there is something else wrong. I used to use tape sometimes til my last plumb job where 6 tape joints leaked on start-up at 2:00 in the morning and I had to work til 4:00 in the morning to seal it up and get it on-line.

there was a very good disscussion on this forum several months ago about how teflon tape is acually a lubricant that allows you to tighten the fitting tighter. you will have a lot better luck using a pipe dope sealer with teflon than tape by itself. a locktite salesman gave a seminar at work showing how the best thing that teflon tape is good for is to break fittings with it balling up inside the threads.

I should ask why the new sediment bowl. Was it plugged, broke, or leaking too?

Look carefully at the threads on both the tank and the sediment bowl. Are you sure it is leaking at the threads? Look for cracks around where the tank threads are, maybe the weld is cracked. If all looks ok try a few extra wraps of the teflon tape. It has always worked for me. Fills in the imperfections in the threads. Good luck to ya

I use Gasoila soft-set thread sealant. I sometimes wrap the threads with teflon tape and put a light coating of Gasoila over the tape. I do this when you have a leak and nothing seems to help.

This can be bought a most plumbing stores. It's ideal for use on gasoline or natural gas. The web site for it is www.federalprocess.com and their toll free number is 1-800-846-7325. Hal

I think you need to take it apart and look it over good. Either the fuel tank fitting is cracked or you have a defective sediment bowl. I have always had good results with the white teflon tape.

PTFE (Tefflon) tape is the white stuff. If you had clean threads in both the tank, and sediment bowl, and used tape, I think the problem might be a cracked tank outlet fitting. getting good light on the area (being careful to not ignite gasoline fumes)and cleaning down to the metal will allow you to see the leak. Using a hand magnifing glass may be needed. If cracked, taking the tank to a repair shop is safer than doing it yourself. Gasoline fumes are driven out of the metal on heating, and can explode the tank (and you). Radiator shops are one potential repair location. LOL JimN

I've had great success using Permatex brand Aviation Form-a-Gasket sealer on sediment bowl threads. It is a thick paste and comes in a 4oz plastic bottle with a brush. Follow the directions on the label. You shouild be able to find it at any NAPA store.

Do you have a compression fitting and tubing? If so, then all the tape in the world won't help unless you have a tapered pipe thread

no, don't have the compression fitting tube. This is the sediment bowl actually screwing into the underside of the tank. It is leaking there. Did not know if there was a special thread tape for gasoline purposes.

Like Farmer Bob suggested, that Aviation gasket stuff works great for gas lines. I also use the permatex pipe stuff, stickey, but really good.

What about using the putty type thread sealant? I've even used Permatex gasket sealant on threads before. Just a thought I had.
