greetings, I am helping a friend rebuild a farmall super C, the lifters are rusted and pitted on the face, is it ok to reface them on a valve machine, or are they case hardened? thanks in advance.
jack

Hi Jack, I called the local machine shop that I deal with and he has been doing this for 45 years.
He said those lifters are designed to rotate to prevent excessive wear. He recommended to buy
rebuilt units from Value Tractor Parts. Their toll free number is 1-888-828-3216. The cost of
a rebuilt lifter is $7.69 and they will allow a
$2.00 core credit on each old lifter that is returned. This may be the best way to go. Hal

Check with your local auto machine shop to see if they would recommend machining those lifters.
Are these the tappets that you're referring to?
I wonder why they are so rusted and pitted. Hal

the lifters are actually tappets,, the reason they are so pitted is the tractor sat out for several years, crank case was filled with rain water... thanks for your reply

I thought water was the culprit. I think you should try and reface one of those lifters since
your cam lobe should give you enough valve lift.
Just remove enough to make it smoothe. Hal

did resurface one last period, I had a student using the wire wheel on the grinder to clean them up... he took it upon himself to use the grinding wheel on the face... luckly I caught him before he ground too much.. so I thought might as well give the valve grinder a shot, cleaned the one up fine, I will do the other 7 next period..BTW I am a Ag shop teacher..
thanks jack

I think the valve refacer with the liquid coolant
would create a nice smooth surface. Now you can show those students the correct way to do it. Be sure to let one do it even if you have to stand guard while they doing it. Nothing like "hands on" when trying to learn. Keep up the good work,
Hal
