I put my liftall pump back in the H today and got ready to test it. When I pulled back on the lever, the engine was missing. Couldn't hear it when it wasn't under load, but the pump was working really good, and it loaded the engine down a little. I noticed a little bit of a miss the last time I had it running, but the miss went away after a few minutes. I pulled the spark plug wires one at a time, and # 4 was missing. I had plenty of spark from the wire, so I guessed I had a valve sticking. I put a new set of plugs in the tractor the day I brought it home last year, and They probably haven't been run 10 hours since new so I didn't think it could be the plug. I deciced to check the valves, since I've never done anything to the engione except the pulugs & oil change. The valves were badly out of adjustment-intakes way to tight& exhaust too loose. Had to take my new alternator off to get the valve cover off, so it was a afternoon job. When I got it back togather & started again, Still had the miss, but only part of the time. Let it run about 45 min, and it didn't get any better so I switched #4 plug with #3. Arrrrgh, now #3 was missing. Unscrewed the plug and grounded it with the wire still on. It only fired about one time out of ten. Dang them Champions. Found one of the old ones that I took out last year and cleaned it up And she runs good as new. Going to town to get a new set of some other kind of plugs, tomorrow. I didn't know if the liftall pump had been upgraded, or not, because there wasn't any yellow # 8 on the tank. I found out when I pulled the handle back-my 5000# gague went almost to 1000#. Probably because I put a thin stainless steel washer under the relief valve spring. Probably shouldn't have.

Have run Champion plugs in my Super M-TA for the last 25 years. No problems so far.

If nothing else, its proven that Champion plugs are made of the softest steel in the plug business.Thats why every one is plated...otherwise they would rust away to nothing. The Autolites were proven the hardest material.Of course this may be the body material and not the actual ground/center electrodes...and with todays platinums/Iridiums/Gold Palladiums, the body material isnt really an operating issue. And there is more choice today than ever, because if you use adapters,a modern peanut style plug could be used if the big old "antique" ones dont cut the mustard.

Kfox nothing wrong with the 1000PSI you will not harm the pump. As for the plugs you did not say what number. The UD16's will work OK but the D18Y not for the old 4 cylinders.

Am I just lucky or what (nock on woods), I've always run champion plugs in the old H and 400 even in my cub cadets (which is what cub uses). of course I gap at .030 to.035 instead of what the books say. David

Autolites or ACs. Yes.

Champions tend to be designed with the higher voltage automotive spark in mind and do not perform as well as the above mentioned in the tractor-otive world.

Been there and have done that!

if champions were free and autolites were five dollars apiece i would still use autolite 3116 in our gas tractors.
