Went to change the oil on my H today. Pulled the canister that holds the filter and NOTHING there!

I have no idea how long it was run without a filter I just bought it last year.

How much damage might this have done?

You asked “how much damage might have been done” in your post. A lot MIGHT have been done if the oil in the engine had a lot of crud in it, but read on.

As others have said, if you still have good oil pressure and don’t hear any knocking from the engine, just change the oil and put in a new filter. The cleaner the oil the better off the engine will be.

Now what damage might have been done is dirt or carbon pieces may have passed through the bearings on the crankshaft and put grooves in them. Normally, the bearing is soft enough to absorb the foreign material and the crankshaft will remain unharmed. However if the piece is large enough, it will damage the crank. The impurities could also have gone through the camshaft bearings and done similar damage as on the crankshaft bearings. Worst case is that something would have lodged between the piston and sleeve and scored them. There may also have been damage done to the oil pump gears if big enough pieces of crud went through the oil pump.

I don’t want to alarm you but this is what MIGHT have happened, not what did happen.

I took off the thermostat housing on my recently acquired H and no thermostat. Havn't gotten to the filter. From the looks of the contents of the pan it either doesn't have a filter element or it has been plugged for years. Ed

The early tractors didn't even have filters. I'm sure your H will be just fine! Glenn F.

If it runs and has oil pressure - no damage.

The H is a bypass system. Only part of the oil goes through the filter.

that little bitty hole that is drilled through the bolt that holds the canister on is all the oil that is ran through the filter, maybe five to ten percent of the oil volume gets filtered depending on your oil pressure. the better your oil pressure the more oil it will push through that little hole.

I don't see it hurting anything,I'd just get one in there and change all the fluid while I was at it..Alot of the older stuff had no filter or a bypass system,so I don't see any permenant damage from running without one for awhile..

If you've only had the tractor a short time and this is the first time you had the filter housing off then there's really no way to know just how long that there hasn't been a filter installed. What damage has been done is done which if it runs without smoke or knock why worry. Just put in a filter for the future and your own piece of mind that a portion of the oil is getting properly filtrated.
