If Bob M or another auto electric vet can help me I would appreciate it. I want to replace my generator with a good alternator I was given, a Mitsubishi IR unit. It"s small like the Hitachi units I have seen suggested as a replacement and it will fit under my M hood. On the modular plug what are the R L connections? Thanks

My question to you is why a altenator? If you have the three brush generator with the adj screw on the back end you can put out more amps and volts than you will need for a 12 volt system.
Ground your field post and one wire from regulator back to your amp meter and battery. I had to put a resister between the field and ground because I was getting over 15 amps and was getting about 16 volts to the battery. All electricial shops say it won't work. I didnt believe it until I tried it. It works on 8n's (10 years) and my M Farmall.

You make a good point Bob. I guess I am guilty of wanting the better mouse trap, I probably can replace the brushes or clean the commutator on the generator and be back in business. However, I do have other Farmalls that I don't have a existing generator for and might give the alternator a try on. -Especially now that I have some ideas regarding the sense and indicator lines. Besides, I was proud of myself for being able to fabricate a smaller & wider pulley in my lathe for the alternator and I wanted to check the output. Several posts had mentioned that increasing the RPM's was a good idea. Thanks to all those that replied.

Easy way to figure out how to wire it is to take it in for a check at your local auto parts store, most are free by the way. When they check it just note how they hook up the wires, most will explain if they can which wire is going where. Now I'll give you my guess which may or may not work. Hook up the big post of the alternator to the battery/amp guage. Then run one wire from the R ternamal to the battery but don't hook it up, touch the battery post and watch the amp guage, if it starts chargeing you have it made if it doesn't try the other ternamal. You may also have to wire them both to the same wire. That is how I got the last alternator working on a 300U the other day but it was off an Isuzu trooper, I even had it checked as I said and that was a big help since I knew then where the wires went.

Tom - I'm not familiar with the Mitsu alterator. However you may be able to figure out the aux terminal connections using an ohmmeter.

Measure the resistance from each terminal to the alternator case. One terminal should show very high resistance (tens of thousands ohms). This will be the "voltage sense" terminal and gets connected directly to the alternator output stud.

The other will show low resistance (only a few ohms). It should be connected to the switched side of the ignition switch.

However this is just an educated guess - use at your own risk!!
