I have an old two row corn planter that I have been using for a few years. The back part of the shovels are rusted off where I believe the hoses for the fertilizer hopper used to attach. I just used to allow the fertilizer to fall on the ground but I believe I have been burning a lot of the corn as it comes up. Should the fertilizer hoses extend low to the ground so that the fertilizer is dropped into the same cavity created with the corn seeds? If the fertilizer is under ground with the seeds can it burn the seed as it germinates or is it more likely to burn a seed after it sprouts above the surface if it is laying above the ground?

Lee,on our JD 494 planter the fertilizer discs run about 2-3 inches offset from the shoe that cuts opening for the seed.

How would it be to spread your granulated fertilizer over your field with a big rotary
spreader. Then use a spring tooth harrow to
mix the soil and fertilizer. Use a drag behind the harrow to level the soil. Use liquid fertilizer when planting the seed. If soybeans
were grown on this field last, I would only use liquid fertilizer.

When I plant sweet corn I soak the seed for 15 minutes in liquid fertilizer and then plant the seed. I pour liquid fertilizer into each row on top of the seed. This was Silver Queen corn and the stalks got so tall they looked like field corn. Hal
