I have a SMTA with IH live hydraulic pump, number on pump is 357214 R91, according tomy parts book it subs to 128190 C1. Anyway pulled distributor and it has oil in it from pump. Took the coupler off the pump and it looks like a seal there around the shaft. Is it likely to be this seal leaking or another inside of pump allowing pressure on this seal? Does anyone know that seal number? My parts book doesn"t show a breakdown on the pump. Is there an overhaul kit available?

If the pump is operating well and providing appropriate hydraulic pressure, I'd fix it. If the shaft is not grooved it just needs a seal. Either someone here, or CIH may help on a number. A good bearing shop will be able to assist with a proper seal if you take the pump in in (seal out but not destroyed is best). There are various repair sleeves that are very thin (soda straw wall thickness) that can be used successfully to clean up a grooved shaft. Be carefult to clean and polish (400grit)the shaft where the sleeve will be pushed on, to keep from distorting the sleeve (follow the directions, or if none, and you feel you need it, get assistance). One additional thought, if a different style new seal is used, the lip of the seal might contact a new spot on the shaft, eliminating the need for a sleeve.
Lotsa perseverence. JimN

haven't gotten far enough to see if shaft is worn, main concern was trying to find seal and was hoeping maybe I could find the seal, then remove the old one without taking pump off. My local NAPA has been good at finding seals with dimensions. Pump has worked fine.

Every time this question comes up, everyone claims that it's probably not the seal, that the shaft and housing are worn, and there's no hope for it and you have to buy a new pump... I don't buy it, but that's the claim.
