SUPER A - WON'T QUIT RUNNING

I finished restoration on my Super A and am having a problem with it running on after I push the ignition button in to stop it. It only is a problem after mowing or running it hard. It is a 1948 with the distributor ignition. I have heard of "dieseling" because of carbon buildup in the cylinder head, but it is a fresh engine with only several hours of running time since the rebuild. Can I advance or retard the timing to help this? Any advise would be appreciated.

I had one that did this sometimes when hot.
I never could cure it. I would shut it down in gear with the clutch in, then release the clutch
to kill it if it happened to run on after I hit the kill switch.

Nick: Is your Super A actually running on compression? How long will it keep going after you push in the switch? My Super A will run on compression for probably 30 to 60 seconds if I shut it off hot from working hard. It doesn't run smooth as there is some misfiring. If you don't allow these thermosyphon tractors to idle a bit and cool down they will do this, but never more than a minute and not smooth, as with ignition on.

If the tractor is running indefinately and smoothly, you may have a malfunction somewhere in switch or wiring allowing enough current through to keep tractor firing. You did mention you heard of tractors dieseling, what you don't say is that your tractor is doing that.

Hugh, that sounds exactly what it is doing. It missfires and runs rough after it is shut off. I never let it go longer than 15 or 20 seconds or so, so I am not sure how long it will do this. I usually choke it and it then will stop.

Nick: These old letter series Farmalls just don't work like your modern day automobile or light truck. When you come in from using tractor, let it sit and idle 2-3 min. They are the same on start up, need to be warmed up before you head out.

Think about the evolution here, just a few short years before the Super A had it's heyday, you went to the barn in the morning, fed, watered and harnesed the horse, then you were ready to work. At the end of the day you always Un harnesed, fed and watered the horse. If you worked him hard that day you took time to brush him. You just think of that idle time as taking time to brush the horse. Why you can even do other chores while grooming the Super A.

This time spent at beginning and end of day will reap huge rewards in engine life.

Must have hi-comp pistons and you need a different spark plug. Quick fix just stop in gear.

Mine had dome pistons and prolly needed a colder plug but it tended to carbon foul plugs so I did not go colder. It needed a little more tlc tuning, etc...

Hi Nick,

When you shut off the iginition, there is no such thing as engine timing; just a spinning hot piece of iron that is getting too much fuel.

Slow that idle down and make sure you've got the throttle closed when ya kill 'er.

Allan

Be sure the idle sped is slow enough and re-check the fuel mixture settings. If the Super A uses a non-adjustable main jet; try raising the fuel level in the float bowl thereby richening the mixture. The engine will run a little cooler with richer mixtures.

Try a lower heat range spark plug. If you are using a D21, go to a D16.
