My brother in law has a SMTA with aftermarket pwr strg and live hydraulics and with oversize 8ply front (row crow) tires and a good loader and around 1500 lbs of cast weights on each rear wheel...it is a darn good lifter. My tired 450 with worn factory equipment is not any better that good lawn tractor in the lifting dept. He made the comment that IH "cheapened up the old M" when they brought out the 450 with triple control hydraulics, pwr stry and quick tach hitch. It is true, mine has the cheap looking sheet steel front wheels instead of the classic iron ring ones. What is your opinion? and thanks

The 450 should have the same front wheels from the factory as the Super M. One problem with the hydraulics on a 450 is one pump supplies both the power steering and tractor valves. There is a valve that divides the supply between these two sources. This valve has an orifice in it that becomes worn and allows the oil to take the path of least resistance. When you want oil at your tractor valves to lift something the path of least resistance is to send more oil through the power steering. If you have a front end loader and are carrying something, when you try to turn the wheels the path of least resistance is to send oil through the hydraulic valves. The valve with the orifice is supposed to divide the oil proportionately between the power steering and the tractor hydraulics. After almost 50 years this isn't happening any more. I used to have an F-11 loader on my 450 and the power steering seemed to be lacking when moving round bales. An old IH mechanic drilled out the orifice that sends oil to the power steer to allow more flow to the power steering unit. Not one of IH's best designs for hydraulics. Other than that I liked the tractor, always started and ran good. I sold it to a good friend of mine, since then he has bought another gas 450 and a diesel 450.

That's actually a priority valve, and it allows your steering to have priority over other hydraulic functions. It's a safety feature, and a good one at that.

You can't make that kind of comparison unless both tractors are in the same mechanical condition. These tractors are both about 50 years old, and have led completely different lives.

It sure as heck sounds like your friend's SMTA has had some work done to it, while your 450 is a little tired and in need of some maintenance.

sounds like your hydraulic filter is plugged, your pump is bad, or your valves are worn out. you should be even with or slightly better with the 450 the mechanics of the 2 are pretty well identical(different packaging, of course). Someone probably added an aftermarket wide front, or your 450 could have its front wheels weighted.
