I have a problem with the transmission on my Farmall Cub. The shift lever can just be pulled out of the top of the case. It is hard to find neutral with it like this so I can hand crank the engine or pull it out of the garage. I don't have the engine running yet put thought I would work on that while I wait for parts. Any ideas on how to get the shift lever attached in the tran again? Thanks

Nik,

Be careful, you're getting advice about shifters other than on Cub transmissions. You have a broken inner shield. It will have to be removed to repair it and now's the time. You will understand the shifter better after you've read this article.

I had the same trouble with mine & it's an easy fix. Take the shifter off the tractor, turn it upside-down & remove the bottom plate (shift pattern plate)...all that happend is the retaining washer worked it's way through the 60 yr old clearance hole...unscrew the handle, pull shifter through the hole, put a bigger washer on it (not too big) & re-assemble...should take but 5 minutes start to finish...it will all make sense when you take it apart & see what I'm talking about...good luck, this one is easy...Josh

My '49 had the same problem when I got it. I'm trying to remember 2 years ago, and it's not really coming back well. There was something broke on the inside of the cover(Seems like it was a retainer ring or something like that). I managed to repair mine(which means about anybody can). Take the top cover off and peek inside. You'll see what I'm talking about. Kevin
