Hello everyone. My 1961 IH 240 is back in the tractor shop where they tell me that the steering shaft with the worm gear on it and the pitman arm have failed. They are trying to find parts here in New England and I thought I would post this message to see if anybody anywhere else might have working steering parts available.

Does anybody have any suggestions? The tractor is running fine except for this total steering failure and I hate to think of having to walk away from it at this point as the engine and the loader work great.

Hey there John. Thanks for the tip. Will get right on it. I sure hate to have somebody tell me this can no longer be repaired when it is finally running great and I have the bad hoses replaced, etc.

Will check out that link right away !!

John, turned out I needed the steering arm, P/N 369697. Wengers was a good suggestion but they didn't have one. My ancient IH guy suggested Bates (in Indiana) who did have one for $75 with a 30-
day warranty. Faced with walking away from a nearly great running tractor that price looked cheap. I am pretty happy and will be happier when I get the beast back home again (it is also getting a new clutch, which finally failed).

thanks for your help,
Dave D

$75.00!!!!! Snap it up! I prefer to go with the old bird in the hand adage.Knowing that these old bird parts are not as plentiful as they once were...not a bad price.

Man, you got that right. The tractor place tried to persuade me to walk away from it and they wanted to sell me a M-F 135(?) about 1974 with a loader. But it just didn't look right and the loader was anerexic compared to the 240's "Superior" model. Had stuff I didn't need, like 3-pt hitch and dual range gearbox. Heck, I don't need that stuff. I only use my tractor for bucketing snow banks, hauling fairly large trees and brush, and digging/
hauling fieldstones. The 240U has a solid drawbar and a greatly strong bucket, and a good running engine that starts (finally) and doesn't smoke a bit. I feel like I understand it and I don't understand a M-F. End of story!
