when I am turning my engine over while timing it, that oil cup is gurgling loud. I filled to the line level, just don't want oil to be sucked into the air intake into the carb and create a bad mess. Is the gurgling sound normal to hear then at proper level?

If by any chance you are turning the engine backwards it will create some strange suction like sounds.

Sounds like your intake valves are open when the pistons are on the UP stroke.

You're timing this engine from a complete disassembly, right?

yes, complete disassembly. Had the head rebuilt at a machine shop.

Have you adjusted the valves yet? It might not be timing, just that the valve lash is set way too tight and the intake valves aren't closing completely.

I agree, it is not normal. If you fill the air cleaner with oil to the line on the cup you will not have a problem with it getting in the carburetor and making a mess.
