I just purchased what I am being told is a 1963 340D backhoe loader. It seems to run great, but has a few issues. The power steering pump is broken and needs to be replaced, the backhoe runs pretty slow (leaks), the vavle cover gasket leaks. I wonder if anyone can help point me to how I verify what tractor I have, where I can get manuals, and where I can get parts.

This needs to be a work tractor for me so I am anxious to get going.

Domenic: Does the tractor have a serial tag? Will be a metal tag about 2" x 4" attached to a casting by rivits. Can you post a photo of tractor? A suggestion, go to Farmall photo gallery, type in International 340 and click on search. It will bring up a list of all 340 photos on file. The backhoe tractor probably being industrial may be a bit different from farm models, but you should see some similiarities. Let us know your findings and how you make out.

I found the Serial Number 15482 S. The Model # section on the tag was blank. I looked at the serial number info on this site and still am not exactly sure what I have. The search continues. I will check out the local Case dealer and see what they know.

Domenic: Can you take another photo with loader up, high enough so to get a good view of front.

I checked out the photo gallery, that is not even close to what my tractor looks like. The sheet metal on these is very squared off. Mine is rounded. Of course I have the bucket and loader as permanent fixtures, but it appeared to be worlds apart from these.

This does NOT make me feel good.

Thanks Hugh, I will post a photo this weekend. There is the tag you mentioned, I will try to read the numbers. I am looking to get this thing running a little stronger so that I can finish the work I have in the yard. But being so new to owning a tractor I feel like a virgin. I am ASE certified on automobiles, but can"t figure out where to put the engine oil on this thing. I am in bad need of a manual.

The good news is the engine, clutch, brakes, tires seem fine.

Domenic: I looked at the photo, definately one of the IH Utilities. Without a good view of the grill, hard to give a positive ID. 300, 330 and 350 all had rounded grills. 240, 340 and 460 had square grills with horizontal bars in grill. Later utilities from 63 through 67 would have vertical lines in grill. After 67 would be horizontal and vertical bars forming a grid.

I'm quite sure it's not a 240, chassis too large. 460 would be a 6 cylinder. This may help a bit.

That helps a bunch. I was starting to fear that I didn"t have what I thought. This things runs great but my arms and shoulders are dead without the power steering pump. This has to be my main priority. Where is the best place to get parts?

Domenic: It will surprise you how much CaseIH will still have in stock or at least can still order in for these old tractors. They are quite competative as well. There are other sources, depending on where you live. Used parts places can often find what you need.
