Question is this. Option may arise in near future where can purchase a JD 6600 in pretty good shape. Have been around combine some but never actually operated. Our Farm now is rented and tended fellow who tends likely to farm 5-10 more years. Tobacco buyout has occured. Some tell me buyout in future this may lead to some land not being farmed. Have no immediate use for the machine now, but if above does happen could have use for machine in future which would likely be used on 50-75 acres. How much would machine be worth? Would it be ok to tarp cover for that period of time probably sit in edge of wood to knock of as much weather as possible? If purchased and not used could any depreciation be claimed as far as tax angle? Farm is Dad's and farm not his primary interest right now. I look after some of the upkeep cause it's home and it's tended by by good farmer at present. Land is mostly suited for tobacco sandy loamy ground. Would it make sense to buy this machine to have or would it be waste of money? Or would getting someone to custom be better option? Not much profit probably either way. Thanks

A late model 6600 combine will be a lot more than you will need for 50-75 acres, as it will cover that in three days or less depending on the crop. I had one and we could run out about 500 Bu of corn per hour stopping to unload on the end of the field. In soybeans and small grain I covered about 35-45 acres per day depending on how early/late we could run. I used to run it on about 1200 acres of corn, beans, and wheat.

If you could find a nice one for a cheap price, (around here you can buy them for under $3500) put it in a shed and do a little custom work to keep it in shape it would probably pay for itself. As far as parts, the 6600 and 6620 had a lot of the same “wear” parts and the others could be fabricated. Setting outside under a tarp and not being used a combine like that will deteriorate in 5-10 years into basically scrap. If you can’t shed it, I would suggest waiting until closer to the time you will actually need it before purchasing, as you might be able to get a newer model.

As far as the tax deduction, if you’re not actively farming and using it in your business I have to believe you’d have a hard time convincing an IRS auditor that it was legitimate.

The time value of money along with the deteriation of the equipment would most likely make this an unwise investment. Unless you wanted to do some custom combining yourself it would probably be hard to justify the purchase cost and the cost of upkeep. But then if the rest of use used the same logic with out tractors we wouldn't be buying any.

A 6600 is and old combine now. 10-15 years from now if it breaks when a crop needs harvested you'll likely be hiring someone to harvest it and still have a repair bill on top of that, if you can even get the needed parts. And after sitting that long it will likely need some major work to be in shape. I've always been told you can spend up to 50% of the yearly custom bill on owning a combine. I'd wait, and with a small acreage like that probably never consider a combine. Jake
